My 9yo stomach aches

My 9yo has been having sore stomach aches for 5 weeks now and I'm trying to work out next steps. GP tested urine and felt stomach, everyone was okay. Should GP have done more tests ? Our diets have stayed the same but my DS moved schools 8 weeks ago although says he's very happy and doesn't have a worry.

I've been in contact with kinesiology clinic which is all new to me. Is there any questions I should be asking ? Or does anyone think I should try a dietician first. These sore stomachs have come out of no where and is missing football says he wants to stay home from school so any pointers would be really appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Have you tried cutting out wheat? Just to see if it helps? Or lactose is another big one. My daughter also had ongoing stomach problems when she was anxious, she kept saying nothing was wrong but she’s a stoic worrier!

We did cut out dairy to begin with but it was still sore. I did consider cutting out gluten but sent my head into a spin. My kids live on pasta and rice , plus so many things with gluten on it. Does gluten intolerance come on with age then ?

Yes, it can happen at any time I think.

If you think there's any chance of coeliac have the blood test while still eaten gluten (wheat, barley, rye) as that's the only way to be diagnosed and going on gluten challenge after cutting it out could be even worse.

Any history of migraine in the family? My sons have abdominal migraines

Notgoingonholiday · 21/06/2021 14:31

My DS had tummy aches and sickness from anxiety caused by a traumatic event. At first we thought he was ill, but after some time and tests it was apparent it was stress related, though he always said he wasn't worried about anything. He saw a child psychologist and went on to see the most amazing therapist. It might be an avenue worth investigating.

Thanks everyone. No history of abdominal migraines. Maybe it's gluten or a child psychologist would help. But he really does keep telling me he's not worried about anything. Has anyone had success with kinesiology?

Have you checked with the school that everything is ok? Obviously it could be diet related, but all I would say is that my DS was adamant he wasn't worried about anything. He didn't link the tummy aches with anxiety. It became a vicious circle as anxiety can cause stomach pains.

Ask your doctor to do a faecal calprotectin test. Not pleasant to do, but will give the doc an idea if there's any inflammation in the poo, leading to inflammation in the intestines

Thanks very much for the tips.

Not going hols - are you able to message me your psychologist please.

Yes great success with kinesiology, helped enormously.

My daughter is around the same age and kept complaining of tummy aches. We had a zoom doctors appointment and it was diagnosed as Gastritis.

She was prescribed Gaviscon for a couple of weeks and took it straight after a meal as this seemed to be when it flared up. This seemed to do the trick and her pain has gone. Could it be something like this?

sosoreagain · 21/06/2021 17:26

Interesting. Yes it's particularly bad straight after a meal. I'll get some tomorrow. Probiotics def did not work .

sosoreagain we went through private healthcare, after getting a referral from our GP. I think that would be the usual way to start the process. Good luck with getting to the bottom of it, I appreciate how worrying it is, especially when they start asking for time off school...we had a lot of phone calls from the school nurse.

ChaseTheSun · 21/06/2021 18:17

Probably best to double check with the gp first as I think you’re meant to be 12 to take it.

Also, don’t expect it to go straight away, it did take quite a few days to see any effect, but we persevered as the gp told us to and it did clear up.

Hope it helps!

When I was little I had stomach aches every day. I thought something was wrong with me. Didn’t know why my tummy always hurt. I was happy at school, had friends etc. It was not until I’m an adult looking back realising I had anxiety. It wasn’t anxiety about school. But anxiety if someone might vomit at school, bc I developed emetaphobia after a child vomitted next to me at school and it made me feel like I would vomit. I was age 7/8 and for years I felt sick and anxious at school. It wasn’t until I was older it stopped (when kids were old enough to take themselves to the toilet if they were going to be sick!!). And if you were to ask me when I was little what was bothering me etc. I would not have known.

Chances are it’s something that has happened recently at the new school if it’s all of a sudden. You can also try looking at diet etc.

As for my dd she gets anxiety sometimes, which makes her tummy hurt. It happens usually if she had a lot of sugar (so it doesn’t happen often). But I did notice a correlation.
