New unknown allergies?

Little one had a really bad reaction when she was around 6 months, started weaning and she went into anaphylactic shock, hospitalised for 3 days. Severe swelling and blistering to the whole of her wee face.

We were sent for skin tests and I took along everything she ate that day, only things came up were egg and apple but 'mildly' so no epi pens or anything just manage with piriton.

Fast forward 6 years sent for retesting and had outgrown her allergies to egg and apple.

Suddenly in February she held one of our guinea pigs, who we've had for three years and been held 100's of times. End wow arms covered in hives face swollen coughing again piriton given and we sought attention right away. She had calmed right down by the point of seeing anyone.

We now don't let her near the guinea pigs but we have noticed on and off over the last two / three months episodes of swelling to the face, puffy eyes all the classic symptoms, she will also have quite an upset tummy the next day too. Giving piriton every time as soon as we notice.

Would this be worth seeking a GP appointment for and asking about further testing? I'm a bit worried that this happened in school and maybe they weren't so quick to pick up on it.

Could it be something in the guinea pig's food e.g. a nut or seed?

Stressedmummyof4 · 21/06/2021 12:18

@MissingTheMoonlight possibly although we have kept her away from the guinea pigs completely since she had the reaction. I'm not sure weather I should be raising this with the GP, do you think it would be worth a telephone call?

Push for a referral to paediatric allergy, and ask for full set of prick testing. It is better to know for sure what to avoid rather than guess. Prick testing doesn’t really hurt, they described it as ‘popping bubbles’ to my son at a similar age and he was fine.

@Solasum thank you. She had it done when she was arpund 6 months and they found she was allergic to egg and apple. We were retested in 2019 and they said she had outgrown it. But these new reactions have come from nowhere. Apart from the first one with the guinea pigs theres no common denominator in the rest of the reactions if you know what I mean? It's just left me very uneasy as its unknown.

Absolute best thing you can do is start a food / reaction / exposure diary. One day you'll 'see' the pattern. It's also the gold standard for eliminating things

Some of the allergy can be caused by exposure. I would ask the gp for referral.
My dc's allergy dr was able to test 120+ allergen from single blood test, discovered completely unexpected allergy from it.
Meanwhile, I would do the food diary so you can find the possible pattern, as pp recommended.

Try and take a photo as soon as any reaction starts our allergy consultant said he found this very useful
