She has had two patches of bad excema one on each cheek since around 3 months. They have grown and grown and now cover most of her cheeks. HV said to see the dr again as I was doing everything they told me to do and nothing helped. The dr has prescribed fucidin which she had ages ago for it but said if it doesn't clear up this time she will need oral anti biotics. Just wondered does this mean she won't have excema any more or that it should clear up? Am kind of relieved as it seems there may finally be a solution. Am sick of people stopping me to ask if she's ok because her cheeks are bright red! She has patterns in it too it looks like she has been branded with something.

It may well help clear up this attack of eczema, but you'd do well to find out what caused it to start with otherwise it may well come back. There are loads of helpful threads on here; more 'obvious' causes include food allergies and washing powder. I'm sure someone with loads more experience will be here soon with more advice!

Thanks mumfie68. Have been wondering about intolerences as it flares up badley after fromage frais for example.

I don't think it will be a long term cure for eczema but you will probably find it clears up these v. bad patches and then allows you to keep on top of any new patches.

My dd first got eczema at about 18mo and has had patches on and off since then. She is now 6.5 and it got infected at beginning of year - I didn't realised it was infected for ages. Just thought it was very bad - just wouldn't shift in spite of using elomet on it etc. Took me months to go to the doctor.

We also used fucicort (think it's same as fucidin?), and she had a course of anit-b. It cleared up and is now the best it has been in ages. We can now keep it under control with moisturising, cut all labels out of clothes, and deal with any little patches we see immediately with elmomet. I also put the fucicort on if they start to look a little infected and so far it's keeping it at bay.

It's worth trying to watch out for what triggers it and it's possible fromage frais . In our case, it seems to be any kind of skin trauma (eg a label rubbing, mosquito bite or falling over) which starts it off and probably some kind of chemicals, but we can't put our finger on it. We avoid soap and use natural toothpaste (colgate etc makes her sneeze and itch!) but I suspect there is still something else that's causing it, and we don't know what it is yet.

hello
sorry to hear about your dd.

the staph thingy is a bactiera we have on our hands, just sometimes it decides to infect eczema. To stop infection kicking in, its important to keep eczema moist so there are no cracks in it iyswim. cos thats where the bacteria enter.

the anti-b's will clear up the infection. fucidin is used on small infected areas, but the skin gets used to it and stops reacting to it, so its important not to use it for very long or very often.

it is possible the fromage frais exacerbates the eczema if she is sensitive to dairy. This is what happened with ds, and as soon as we replaced his formula with prescription allergenic stuff it cleared up. You could try steering free of dairy for a bit (til she is clear) then trying a bit again to see if it makes the eczema flare. If she is allergic it'll happen every time, not just every now and then.

Ok thanks, I think I need to start recording foods and when it flares up, often it looks relatively ok then she eats and it is very angry looking and bright red straight away, often this is after she's eaten a lot of things so I've found it hard to pin down one food but fromage frais definately does it. Wasn't sure if this was because it's messy so goes all over her skin or if it's actually a food intolerance thing iyswim.

Hi used2bthin! Yeah the staph aureaus, we have been there. lol it makes me laugh because it can be carried in your nose. Our dds dermatologist sent us all off to the doctors for a nose swab. Dh had it and nanny and dd herself got given treatment also. You can pass it on by picking noses lol. Can just see us now lining up for the earbuds to test us all. Well funny. Treated them with cream in the nose! It all sounded very bizarre at the time.
