I think I've just made myself allergic to ice cream.

My child has had to go gf and lf for a couple of weeks, to see if it helps some symptoms he's been having (doctor recommended). I joined him to keep him company.

I've always been a bit funny with milk, but my husband bought some ice cream at ther weekend, and I decided to have a big bowl full.

I've been sick all day - in the loo for most of it - ended up needing electrolytes. No other symptoms, pretty def it's the ice cream.

What the hell happened?! Does that mean I'm ruined for life? Will the same thing happen to my son? I know it sounds ridiculous to be so freaked out, but it's such a dramatic reaction.

If this rings a bell with anyone else, I'd be grateful for your insight.

You can get food poisoning from ice cream

Shahlalala · 31/05/2021 22:48

Did you go entirely dairy free? Lactose and cow protein are two different things. If you were just lactose free then the cow proteins were still in there but maybe your lactase production has dropped in the absence?

I’m dairy free while breastfeeding my son due to his allergies and on an occasion I accidentally had dairy I felt a bit unwell but not like a stomach bug but they do advise easing back into dairy, this is much longer than two weeks though.

Perhaps try the milk ladder to gradually check but it seems very unlikely after two weeks and the absence wouldn’t create an allergy as such I wouldn’t think.

Shahlalala · 31/05/2021 22:49

As Dobby said food poisoning can happen.

lborgia · 31/05/2021 22:49

True, but for several reasons it feels like a reaction rather than a bug.

I don't feel sick, in any way, DH also ate it, and I didn't feel "off" food.

Mm, I know I have a problem with milk proteins, and that I'm fine with butter, so maybe it was that. I've been avoiding dairy completely ther last 10 days. Normally I'd have a little cheese most days.

Ok, so this has happened to me too.

Used to be able to eat dairy if it was cold but would be very ill if it was warm/hot (eg. Creamy sauces)

Both children are allergic to lactose and cmp so I stopped all dairy so I could breastfeed.

I now can't touch any dairy. I get blisters in my mouth, I'm so sick and it's bloody annoying.

I swear that part of it is linked to hormonal changes too as each major allergy event in my life has happened around a time of hormonal change (puberty/taking the pill/depo shot/pregnancies/peri-menopause) but allergy clinic seem to think I'm ok...

This would happen to most people if they did what you did. You can't go cold turkey then have a massive bowl of ice cream and not expect to get ill. You have to build it back into your diet more slowly.

Thanks all - @SouthOfFrance, you sound so wise and sure, I wish I'd know this before we started. GP didn't say anything about how to reintroduce... well at least I practised on myself first.

Google the milk
Ladder for reintroduction. I can't do it as I've gone full blown allergic but hopefully you can x

lborgia · 01/06/2021 07:10

Thanks Purple, I'll try that.

Menopause sent me down the milk ladder very quickly. A mild intolerance that only required avoiding cream cakes and milkshakes has gone to a dairy ingredient below the salt on the label having me heaving. I agree with purple on the hormone stuff.

Try going up the milk ladder, it works for many.

lborgia · 21/06/2021 11:31

That sadly rings a huge bell, @Postdatedpandemic, since menopause I'm a mess of reactivity, full asthma, gluten reactions, hayfever for first time since teens (there's a potential hormone link again I guess), so I'll have a Google about that. Thanks for coming back with your commentSmile
