Almonds?

Hello!!

We've baked a double chocolate loaf cake (it smells amazing!!) anyway, it has ground almonds in it. DS is desperate to take a slice to school tomorrow in his packed lunch. School is a nut free school and I know there's a child in the class that has a potentially fatal allergy to nuts.

Is an almond a nut? Google is bringing up all sorts of answers! Wanted to check somewhere before I send DS to school with a slice tomorrow!

They are technically a seed, but culinarily speaking they are classed as a nut and are in the category of nuts and so-called nuts to which people can have serioys allergies. If the school is nut-free, there is no way I would send my child in with something containing almonds. Sorry! Can't he just have a slice when he gets home?

Don't, please don't. I have a nut allergy, it's not that serious but I really hate when people around me are eating nuts, if I can smell it it makes me feel ill and k have to be paranoid about what they've touched after and any crumbs. I get a headache from a teeny tiny trace.

Lulu1919 · 03/05/2021 17:06

No please don't
I work in a school and this is not allowed
Cake sounds good though !!!!

Almonds are tree nuts. Please don't send in the cake with your child. The school is nut free for a reason.

HotPenguin · 03/05/2021 17:16

Why would you even risk it knowing there's a child with a life threatening allergy? Just eat it yourself!

Apologies to those I've offended. DS doesn't suffer with any allergies so I normally don't have to be careful at home.

I normally check the back of packets so I know they don't contain nuts for anything that is going to go into school (mini rolls were put back today in Sainsbury's because it says may contain nuts) hence why I've asked on here.

I genuinely didn't know that an almond was a nut! Blush

We shall keep it at home and enjoy it ourselves.

My son had life threatening food allergies but I wouldnt expect the other children in a nut free school to stay away from "may contains". I'm sure those mini rolls are OK to bring in!!

*has not had (makes it seem like something has happened to him!)
