MMR and egg allergy

My DS (2.2) is allergic to eggs and therefore, I have postponed his MMR vaccination untill now. He's having it in hospital and I was told we should stay there for only an hour after the vaccination. I've always thought that one should stay for longer??
Could you let me on some of your experiences with that and whether I should be worried of a reaction.

Thanks

DD2 had hers done in hospital and we probably waited for about three hours before going home. But this was about six years ago. As far as I know egg is no longer used in MMR vaccination.

I have a friend whose dd has an egg allergy. They had the mmr in hospital and stayed for a similar time. I think she said that the risk of a reaction was quite small and if it's going to happen it happens as quickly as the ordinary reactions do. I'm sure all will go well.

Not quite the same thing but ds is going into hospital tomorrow morning to have a flu vaccine and is allergic to egg (normally a very strict no no for egg allergic children, but ds has other health problems). I am worried about what could happen and was also wondering about the length of time we may be there as I have to get back for a smear in the afternoon (not that I would mind missing it really, lol!)

Last year ds had mmr in hospital due to egg allergy and we had to stay 6 hours.

Heartmum-good luck for tomorrow

emzzzzz · 12/11/2007 18:11

As far as I know be prepared to stay the whole day, just in case x

StrawberryMartini · 12/11/2007 18:14

I was there 2 hours with DS. They are just covering their backs, the Doc there said there hadn't been an egg-related reaction at my hospital ever!

brimfull · 12/11/2007 18:16

My two had their mmr in hospital, think we stayed 1-2 hrs.

Heartmum2Jamie · 12/11/2007 22:26

6 hours . Lordy, I hope not! I absolutely HATE hospitals. Just brings back far too many bad memories that I would much rather forget. Plus, I am relying on the train home, don't want to be traveling on my own in the dark (ok, just call me a wuss!)

Thanks for your answers and reassurances. I still have it in my head that maybe I shouldn't vaccinate him yet, and yet I also believe this vaccination is important with measles turning up again. The hospital told me, we would stay there for an hour. I assume they know what they're doing, and if there was a reaction, it would happen in the first hour?

DD2 has an egg allergy and i too delayed her MMR for a while. I finally did it because we are in SW london and there is a lot of measles about. I just made sure she didn't even have a sniffle when we did it and was in good overall health.

The GP recommended she have it in hospital "just in case" although the hospital said "the MMR is no longer cultured in eggs so there is no risk". I insisted and they did it at hospital.

They told me to be prepared to stay up to 6 hours, but after 1 hour with no sign of any reaction they said we could go.

debliz5 · 13/11/2007 12:37

Thanks amidaiwish. How old was your DD2 at the time? Well, I hope DS won't have a sniffle although it's hard today to find 2 minutes without him having a slighltly runny nose...

DS is also allergic to eggs. He had the MMR atr the normal time in the medical centre as they reassured me that as others have said it is no longer cultured from eggs. He was fine, still worried me though

amidaiwish · 13/11/2007 12:48

it was June, so she was 21 months.

they didn't want me to delay it and had been receiving appts since she was 15 months, but i just kept postponing it - firstly from cold feet (mine!), and then because she had colds etc.
