Allergic Rhinitis much worse in pregnancy. Anyone else?

Does anyone who has allergic rhinitis find it much worse during pregnancy?

It was actually BETTER during my first pregnancy but this time around, my nose is itching and running all the time and I'm sneezing and wheezing too. I am trying not to take anything but have got some Piriton which I'm taking when I really have to.

It's basically a dust and pollen allergy so very boring and hard to address other than having mattress protectors etc and avoiding vacuuming

Anyone else? If so, have you any advice?

I think a stuffy and/or runny nose is quite a common side-effect of pregnancy - hard luck! How far along are you 'cos it might get better when you are out of the hormonally turbulent 1st trimester (of course if you are at 38 weeks you're going to throw something at the computer now aren't you )
Could your dr prescribe nose drops of any sort? I think they are locally acting so would be ok with baby and might help with the itching. Otherwise - good luck not hoovering!

NorthernLurker - thanks for replying. I'm almost 30 weeks so won't throw anything at the computer . I have asked the doctor for nasal sprays but no luck. The pharmacist scared the life out of me giving me the Piriton saying that she wouldn't have taken any anti-h herself during pregnancy which wasn't exactly help.

Never mind, I guess I'll just enjoy the break from vacuuming for now!

I've had similar experience, 1st pregnancy lots better but this one struggled. Mine seems worse mid morning which is very odd as histroically I would be bad first thing.

One MW said take anti H - other said don't! Nothing like consistent advice!

No help I'm afriad!!

Much worse and occurred much earlier on during second pregnancy, but maybe that's the difference between carrying a girl and then a boy! Actually, my nose hasn't really calmed down since whereas during first pregnancy it stopped virtually the minute I delivered. Mine was always horrendous at night and okay during the day. Stacked myself up with 7 pillows, Albas oil, 'Breath Right' strips, 'Happinose' and steamed regularly - took the edge of not being able to breath at night, but that was all!

I was really bad in one of my pregnancies became allergic to lots of fruit as well due to the shared similar protein of the silver birch tree to which I am higly allergic. I took up to 4 piriton a day with various pregnancies I was assured by my gp that it's been used for donkey years so any side effects on unborn babies would have been flagged up by now.

I had a horribly uncomfortable nose during both my pregnancies, constantly blocked, more than running, but I never put it down to allergies, as I don't normally suffer.

My GP told me that pregnancy hormones (HCG) make the mucus linings more sensitive and therefore...more snot.

Funnily enough, mine improved! Which was just as well because I was nervous about taking anything byond Beconase. And actually, has never been as bad since.... and my kids are now 9 and 11. Or maybe it's just old age!

read some research recently saying lots of fish helped prevent allergic rhinitis in the baby - so maybe it would help you .
