Cheap, filling, gluten free snacks for a growing teenager

Sandseasurfsun · 14/02/2021 21:53

Any ideas welcomed please. He eats 3 good meals a day but needs to snack too. He’s on the 95th centile for height and 75th for weight so no weight issues, just growing like mad!

Toasted sandwiches (but the GF bread is tiny and expensive), omelettes (current go to), granola (pricey) and porridge are the usual things but I feel like there’s probably better options I’m not thinking of.
I do bake muffins, flapjacks and brownies fairly regularly but I’m looking for things he can just sort himself without my input. Anything individually wrapped or a convenience option is always just so expensive in the GF aisle.
Thanks

How about cut up apple dipped in peanut butter? For snacks to be filling there needs to be some good protein. Rice cakes with hummus? In my experience lots of gf items are high in sugar so not ideal. Could you or he make some oat/seed/nut bars?

VirtualLearning · 14/02/2021 21:59

I often have :
Bowls of Greek yoghurt with seeds and honey or jam
Quick chickpea soca (think that’s how it’s spelled - basically gram flour made into batter with a bit of water and oil and fried like a pancake. Much cheaper and less processed than GF bread
GF pancakes (I make these by grinding GF oats instead of flour )
Nuts
Cheese on GF oatcakes

I also make buckwheat flat breads (buckwheat flour and yoghurt And yeast I think but I use google as can’t remember - again seconds to cook in a frying pan

Bananas
This week I managed to make flapjacks with seeds and nuts in , very popular. I always think seeds add more nutrition and protein and cheap !

VirtualLearning · 14/02/2021 22:03

Ps you’re already onto a good thing with eggs and do you try different ways - we bake them in butter with a slice of Parmesan .

Olives , Parma ham , crisps. Also have you tried Asda as I find them much cheaper for GF flour for example (something like 49p a kilo)!

VirtualLearning · 14/02/2021 22:05

We also make quick wraps (again I use google ) then top with cooked pepper and onion and chicken and grated cheese and grill it. It’s annoying to make from scratch but quite quick

Avocado
Greek yogurt
Cheese slices
Peanut butter on apple
Cream cheese on celery
Deli meat roll ups
Gf pasta and sauce
Salami sticks

HotPenguin · 14/02/2021 22:09

We use BFree pitta breads rather than GF bread, they are a better size. Rice cakes with peanut butter, chocolate spread. Naked bars.

RJnomore1 · 14/02/2021 22:09

Baked potatoes?
Sweet potato wedges?

In fact baked sweet potato with salsa and mozzarella is amazing and microwaves fast

Alwaysready · 14/02/2021 22:10

Yes definitely need protein to fill up so porridge etc wont last him long.
Quiches, frittata, potato waffles and cheese, yogurts, pancakes, hummous/ cheese crackers

79andnotout · 14/02/2021 22:14

I make my own granola using gf porridge oats. So much better than the shop bought stuff, and good to grab a handful for a snack too.

Sandseasurfsun · 14/02/2021 22:17

@GlamGloria peanut butter is a really good call, would be better than jam on toast too. Thanks
Hummus too, we buy it in summer for picnics all the time but for some reason I never pick it up at this time of year.

@VirtualLearning thanks, I’ll have a look at soca and oat pancakes.
Yes, we get a delivery from Asda so use their flour etc. Bought a waffle maker so that works well for something different at the weekend too.
Cold meats, crisps, cheese, crackers and soup are daily lunches while he’s off school. (It’s jacket potato most days at school)

Thanks, given me some new ideas to try in this weeks shop.

Popcorn. Easy and great fun to make. Corn is gluten free. Mini jacket potatoes. Bake a batch in the oven and reheat in microwave. Jacket potatoes are one of the most nutritious foods. Soup. Lentil or pea soup are nourishing and can be heated in a microwave soup mug.

Sandseasurfsun · 14/02/2021 22:30

Great, loads more ideas, thanks everyone.

Definitely need to nail making some kind of flat bread thing to use as a base for the protein. Sounds like a good half-term task!

Mix natural yogurt with GF self raising flour till it forms a dough. Use for flatbreads, pizza bases etc. Quick and cheap

Also as a teen he's perfectly capable of baking - I'd start with ensuring he's equipped to make his own GF snacks as much as possible.

Anyonebut · 14/02/2021 22:40

Nachos (cold) with guacamole and/or some beans/sour cream.
Nuts of any sort.
Vegetable sticks (carrot, pepper, celery) with any kind of dip (sweet potato and nuts, bean and herbs dip, hummus, even tuna-mayo).
You can also make pastry-free mini quiches with whatever filling (bacon , veggies) in muffin tins, they freeze well and you can then microwave them.

@Maybemay123 no, not had food prescriptions for years unfortunately. He’s not the only Coeliac in the house either (there’s 3 of them, he just snacks most!) so one of the loaves of bread with about 8 slices doesn’t make it very far!

This is great, appreciate all the input. Shopping trips used to involve a good mooch round different supermarkets reading all the labels for new stuff but these days I just seem to get the same old stuff delivered for ease. Definitely jogged my memory for other things that are out there!

Nuts. Filling and naturally GF.

Dilbertian · 14/02/2021 23:29

When my teens were growth-spurting I used to hard-boil a dozen eggs every Sunday and keep them in the fridge for snacking. There were rarely any left by Friday.

Bandino · 18/02/2021 21:11

Not completely without effort but we have a waffle maker and make coconut flour ones. You can make a batch, freeze them, then put one in the toaster.

Dilbertian · 18/02/2021 23:11

Costco do a really nice gf waffle/pancake mix. Brand is called something like Birch Benders. It also makes good microwave mug cakes Wink
