Allergic to all mussels or just some?

I've always loved mussels — the kind of small mussels you get in Europe. Then I ordered mussels in New Zealand one day and was served large green-lipped ones, after which I felt so nauseous that I couldn't do anything for a day or two. A later experience of taking glucosamine and chondroitin tablets (which include green-lipped mussels) and feeling sick confirmed my suspicion that I have an allergy to green-lipped mussels.

I've avoided mussels for the last few years, assuming that I can no longer eat them, but someone has suggested that I may be able to eat the ordinary type. Has anyone else had any experience of this? I don't have any other food allergies. Are there ways of testing that don't include eating mussels and potentially feeling pretty ill?

I'm no expert on allergies but I cannot eat mussels at all now. I used to love them - just the bog standard European kind - have never tried a green lipped one and sadly never will now Sad even though I love seafood. I was ok with occasional mussels when I was younger but then in my early 20s I started getting sick and dizzy after having them (I kept putting it down to eating a bad one until I eventually clocked that it was happening every time and the reactions were getting more and more violent!!). So reluctantly I realised I was no longer able to eat mussels but assumed I was still ok with other shellfish - I can eat prawns/lobster/crab all day long with no problem whatsoever.

Then one day I went to a very posh restaurant and they brought out a little "extra" taster dish between courses. It was a razor fish (the long thin shell fish). I gobbled it down without thinking twice and oh my god I have never been so ill in all my life Envy (not envy!). So now I avoid all molluscs. I'd love to try an oyster or a scallop but I just don't dare...

I had a bout of (diagnosed) salmonella from an unknown source. Since then I haven't been able to eat muscles or scallops - I was violently sick - but can eat any other form of shellfish. My GP and environmental health told me the salmonella stays in your system and can be reactivated by certain foods. Could you have had the same?
