Itchy ezcema waking 2.5 yr old - any suggestions for solutions?

His skin doesn't look too bad, feels rough but he is scratching like mad
I am slapping hydrocortisone on 1-2x a day plus diprobase

Any suggestions? The sleepless nights are wearing me down

Hi TheBlonde (waves)Shea butter is fab, it keeps the skin very soft and you know it's got no nasties. I get mine from these people. I also use their black soap for washing.

NotAnOtter · 06/10/2007 22:30

i was once prescribed a very mild sedative to stop me scratcing
maybe a couple of nights of medised or benylin nighttime to break the cycle?

Spoo · 06/10/2007 22:34

Which product do you use with Akamuti? I have a 2.5 year old with bad eczema too and would like to try something new as normal potions aren't working very well.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/10/2007 22:35

these saved me

TheBlonde · 06/10/2007 22:35

Hi Kitty

NAO - yes we tried medised a few nights back but I don't want to give it every night

Some nights he is sleeping okay but others he wakes, crying and scratching
Tonight he scratched so much he was bleeding

on sale

bunnyhunny · 06/10/2007 22:39

ds is only 8 months old, so this probably won't work with a 2 year old, but I have sewn mitts onto his sleepsuits. he still rubs, but can't break the skin.

TheBlonde · 06/10/2007 22:40

Thanks LVOC - they look great

Wimmilymorris · 06/10/2007 22:41

What LadyVictoria said. Those sleep suits are a godsend. Also good in the car when ds is scratching and you're driving and can't reach to sooth him.

NotAnOtter · 06/10/2007 22:42

bandage?
i used to scratch them off
cool room
all cotton bedding etc
make sure he is very tired
h/c before bed
evening primrose oil - actually worked for me and was a sceptic

TheBlonde · 06/10/2007 22:44

Room is cool, bedding all cotton

I'm wondering about getting him a lighter duvet though

OP posts:
bunnyhunny · 06/10/2007 22:44

seriously, sew mitts onto his sleepsuits yourself - a darn sight cheaper than £26 each.

I have also considered putting emmolient on his mitts, so when he scratches, he actually creams himself...

TheBlonde · 06/10/2007 22:49

I reckon he would probably scratch within his suit if you know what I mean

Does it matter if the duvet is synthetic or down?

When things are very bad i use something the Dr gives I only have to put it on once and the flare up immediately goes away. I use it very sparingly but it works! It's called 'elocom'

MrsCellarfullofbones · 07/10/2007 08:11

Piriton? I know it's not ideal....

geekgirl · 07/10/2007 09:01

TBH, our GP prescribed phenergan for this - worked a treat and we just stopped using it when dd1's eczema improved once she got to 3.5-4.

Do you use Balneum plus? Was ready to skin myself last night (I have eczema too) but a Balneum bath made it bearable.

TheBlonde · 10/10/2007 19:01

Thanks everyone

Been to the GP and he has prescribed piriton
I have also ordered some sleepsuits
(don't have time to sew my own!)

OP posts:
cupcakesgalore · 10/10/2007 19:54

we have had to give dd piriton every night for ages, otherwise she wakes up screaming with the itchiness and in the morning is covered in scratches, blood etc. GPs can prescribe a more flvoursome version!

micci25 · 10/10/2007 20:00

what washing powder are you using? my sis had a ds who has really bad ezcema and hv advised her to switch to a cheaper brand coz they have less perfumes in and are less irritating to sensative skins! her ds's problem hasnt been as bad since

TheBlonde · 10/10/2007 20:11

I use surcare as DH is also covered in eczema

nelly20 · 10/10/2007 20:52

Where do you get sleep suits with fitted mit? My 6 month old has eczema. I've suddenly realised all the usual places (mothercare, Next, Tesco etc) stop doing mits on size 6 to 9 months

Leslaki · 10/10/2007 21:01

buy some oats, put them in a muslin square/sock or wahtevr, make sure it's securely tied up so oats don't escape! Pop it in a bath - run the bath with the oat bundle in so ait gets through the whole bath and rub gently over sore/inflamed areas. It is amazing! It takes the aoreness and itchiness away. I'd heard it loads of times but never tried it till about 2 years ago, now when I'm bad I use it and it always works.
Washing powder is a biggie for me - I can only use Ariel, anything else (inc Fairy, Surcare etc) makes melook like I've bee badly burned.

TheBlonde · 10/10/2007 21:17

nelly20 - further down the thread LVOC has linked to a place that sells the suits

OP posts:
TheBlonde · 10/10/2007 21:18

Leslaki - thanks for the oats tip, we use aveeno oat powder sometimes
