Worries about starting Montelukast but nothing left to try.

My DS is 7 and has severe allergies to dust, cat, dog, grass. He's had adenoids removed and has tried every antihistamine combo available, he's also been on a constant nasal spray for years now.

We've got to the point where the drs have said they're considering moving onto Montelukast and I'm torn.

On one hand his symptoms are so severe, he is constantly sniffing, snorting, sneezing and wheezing, he has a constant nasal drip so I always clearing his throat. He has a constant crust around his nostrils that makes his skin sore. He can't participate in heavy activity because he cannot breathe properly when exerting himself. It is effecting his quality of life, he's very hyper mobile and has next to no core strength so exercise is critical. He's over all an exhausted, frustrated little boy with a ok these symptoms.

However, I've heard horror stores about Montelukast, behavioural and mental health side effects and no one can tell me if they go away if the medication is stopped or how frequently people experience them.

There's nothing else to try, he's had all the antihistamines on the market, he's on a blue inhaler that's being used more and more.

I too have heard horror stories, but I have 3 DS' on Montelukast and none have had negative side effects.

Personally, I would consider it worth a try given DS' symptoms. Left as he is it is likely his symptoms will have a negative effect on his behaviour and MH anyway.

Poor him, it sounds horrible. But sounds like you and him have got to the point where you need to change something as its affecting his quality of life so much, which will have its own 'side effects'.

You could try posting on the anaphalaxis facebook group as there are people on there who have used it or have children who do. May be worth an ask if you don't get much response on here.

Did the doctor have any alternatives?

Any drugs when you look at them have potential side effects when taken, some of them pretty shocking ones. However you need to balance the risk and the dr wouldn’t prescribe it unless they thought it would help.

My son has been on it most of his life with no issues.

Thanks for the feedback, the Dr hasn't said there's any alternatives but he has gone back to ENT specialists to see if they can offer anything else.
