Coeliac, would it set off concerns with a full blood count?

Ok, my son has been ill for years. He’s had barium swallows, blood tests the lot. Constant vomiting and more medicine than you can shake a stick at.

He was eventually diagnosed with reflux, ibs and lactose intolerance. He has been ill for weeks, no energy, totally out of it and sleeping for hours straight. I did suspect diabetes as his sugars were not completely right.

Dr took bloods on Friday and they have put him on iron and B12 today and now he’s doing more tests on the blood for coeliac as he thinks it could be that. He’s also taken a stool sample.

What’s flagged up to suggest that in a random FBC? The iron levels? They were not really clear over the phone.

I know coeliac is an auto immune disorder not an allergy or intolerance, it just seems to be the place to post it!

Did they just do a FBC? Yes the size & shape of cells can show deficiencies but they still usually request ferritin & B12/folate blood test. I suppose the result, along with the ibs, has triggered investigation for coeliac.

Celiac disease can damage the part of the small intestine where iron, folate, and vitamin B12 are absorbed. This damage leads to reduced nutrient absorption. Reduced absorption means the body may not get enough of these nutrients, with anemia being one potential result

He had a full blood count and some others. I didn’t see the paperwork, we were in and out.

They were done Friday, about four vials and then he called today. Told me to pick up a prescription for iron and B12 immediately and they were running tests for Coeliac?

If they took 4 blood tubes then they will have taken the B12, Ferritin & probably the coeliac one at the same time, all frequently ordered based on tiredness, the coeliac one can take longer to come back though.
I hope he is feeling better soon with the prescription for ferritin & B12. Ferritin tablets can cause constipation (or tummy upset!) initially though so you may need to get a stool softener from the pharmacy.
