Any ideas? They were profusely apologetic, but I do understand that if he's determined to get his hands on it he's difficult to stop.. just don't understand why he didn't react? Saw the packaging, had egg in cake and icing...??
Wouldn't have been more than a mouthful, but that's all it's taken in the past..

thoughts please

J

The egg was well cooked or probably no egg whites in the recipe?

DS could eat scrambled eggs at some point but give him something with a bit of mayonaise (uncooked egg) and he is in trouble.

Dabbles · 30/09/2007 12:48

they do grow out of being allergic to cooked egg first... take him back to doc for further tests? or just test at home with a fairy cake etc? but have pitirton on hand!!

HOw bad was the reaction to egg last time? how long ago? How much cake did he have?

If the last reaction was serious, please don't experiment with that, at least not yet

Jackaroo · 30/09/2007 13:47

The rast test they did brought his arm up in a welt, he's always reacted to eating it by projectile vomiting, red hives on his face, and feeling awful / "ill" and sudden runs (I guess the body getting rid of it both ways!).. the royal icing had egg white, but of coures I've no way of knowing if he ate that or not. For the sponge it just said "egg", but for the icing it said "egg white".

Not keen to try it yet, because last reaction to food was only June....

DS1 (13)had a major egg allergy (vomiting, swelling etc) but it didn't seem to matter if he ate cake.

weird

he is fine now although just the thought of eggs make him gag

Bluestocking · 30/09/2007 14:06

My DS was allergic to egg that wasn't thoroughly cooked - scrambled egg brought him out in a rash - but cooked things containing egg, like cakes, were always fine. I only realised he was OK with raw egg when he scraped out a cake mixture bowl when I'd been baking and my mother said "I thought he wasn't supposed to have uncooked egg". Bad mother.

You know what I think I'm gonig to try it. I don't think he'll get an appt again this fast (after only 3 months)but it would be so great if he could eat birthday cake, they have it all hte time at nursery!

Thanks for your posts....

My brother and dad are allergic to eggs but can eat cake quite happily - no symptoms.

I think this is quite common

Forgot to say, it definitely had whole egg in it - but don't know if it was powdered or not. Maybe I should email Sainsbury's...

Jackaroo - let us know how you get on if you try the egg. Would be really interested to know.

My DD had a really bad reaction to egg, doc refused to test as they said they were happy with my description being a true allergy.

Am just struggling to make an egg-free cake for her first birthday. Would dearly love to buy her an edible one for her second birthday

raku · 08/11/2007 20:39

Hi Katsma, I have a delicious egg-free chocolate cake recipe:

10 oz SR flour
1/2 tsp salt
3 tblsp cocoa
6 oz caster sugar
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1/2 pint milk (I use soya milk as dc have dairy allergy)
1/4 pint corn oil (or sunflower)
3 tblsp golden syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Heat oven to 180C, GM 4. Grease and line bases of 2 8-inch tins with greased grease-proof paper.
Sift the flour, salt, cocoa and sugar into a bowl and make a well in the centre.
Dissolve the bicarb in 1 tblsp of the milk and pour into the flour then add the remaining milk, oil, syrup and vanilla essence. Beat well to make a smooth batter. Pour into the tins and bake - it says 40 mins but it's more like 25 in my oven, so check early.

Choc icing for middle and top:
2 oz cocoa
4-5 tblsp hot water
2 oz butter or dairy-free spread
8 oz sieved icing sugar

Mix together cocoa, butter and hot water to make a smooth paste. Beat in the icing sugar to make a thick icing (you may need to add more icing sugar - don't add too much water to start with).

Hope it's not too late for her 1st birthday!

My DS tested positive for an egg allergy.

The allergy consultant said it is common to grow out of it before the age of 3.

One DS is a year old she said we can try him on things with "hidden" egg in them such as cake.

Then at about 3 they will do an egg challenge in hospital
