Ds 12 is on fexofenodine twice a day, beconase nose spray and sodium cromoglicate eye drops. He's still struggling with very painful eyes and constant snot. One night this week his eyes started to swell (they did this last year to stage pharmacy thought we might need a&e) and tonight he was outside and briefly sat on grass and Came inside covered in bumpy rash with welts. He looked like he had burns.
I'm going to phone go Monday but realistically can they do much more?

Indoor air purifier. Get the best on the market. Spare no expense.

Pull up your carpets or impose a no shoes rule in your house. Jackets and outerwear should always be hung in a closed closet when taken off.

Wash hands and rinse face as soon as he comes in. Shower before bed.

Wash bedding often.

I use Flonase, which I believe has the same active ingredients as Dymista. Also one clarityn tablet nightly from March to October.

Thanks all I'm going to call gp tomorrow and ask to be referred. We went to seaside tonight and he actually seemed a bit better for a few hours, you could actually hear the snot develop on way home!
This is how bad his eyes get it's like the inside swells .

Oh my word, that looks terrible confusednortherner, your poor boy. I would ask the GP for an email address to send the photos to so that s/he can see how severe it is. I think there is a tendency for people, health care professionals included, to be a bit dismissive of seasonal allergies, but anyone seeing those pictures will see that you aren't complaining about a sniffly nose! I hope you get things sorted soon.

Runkle · 14/06/2020 23:24

Poor guy, that looks awful bless him.

happytoday73 · 15/06/2020 17:42

Oh dear. That's sore. Did you manage to get GP to refer you today? I know the pollens been v high recently, at least near me, but that needs more help

confusednortherner · 15/06/2020 18:49

Spoke to Gp today who was really helpful and has doubled the fexofenodine to adult dose, dymista nasal spray and will do steroids as a last resort but we are trying to avoid that as they send ds up the wall.
Gp said allergy clinic has a minimum 6 month wait but knows of a paediatrician who's very good with allergies and tests so is writing to them but said there's no guarantees they will see him so 🤞

Have you tried any of the other allergy meds like cetirizine or loratadine?

confusednortherner · 15/06/2020 18:58

We've worked our way through everything available over the counter previously, Puritan has some effect on the swollen eyes but makes him quite sleepy so not a long term option.

Is olopatadine available in the UK?

It's a recently released otc eye drop med in the US, sold under the names Pataday, Pazeo and Patanol.

GlamGiraffe · 21/06/2020 00:38

Fexofenadine 180mg and cetirizine can be taken together. If you have no luck please ask your gp to check with an allergist the appropriate dose for your son (based on weight) some children arezsldi prescribed montelucast, whic is usually used to treat asthma but is aldi used I combination therapy uo treat severe cases of allergic rhinitis. It foes now gomdxwoth a black box warning to be award of though. I would ho o the lust for the clergy clinic regardless as you will still need treatment hor following years.

Your poor boy op 😔 our ds (15) has suffered all his life, his eyes can swell so much there is just a little slit - tablets twice a day + nasal spray + eye drops and every couple of years the anti histamine stops working and has to be changed or dose upped.

Anyway, saw these acupressure hayfever armbands and figured why not try them, around £12 on amazon - it has worked! He's only took 3 tablets this year! No drops or nasal spray.
He was so impressed, I got one for myself (I do suffer but not as badly) and its worked for me too, completely eased all symptoms.
