7 week old - Heat rash? Eczema? Allergy?

Hello,

Does it look like heat rash? Eczema? Or an allergy?

My baby is 7 weeks old and it’s exclusively breastfed.

She doesn’t have fever and acts normal.

Her skin is full of tiny spots and feels bumpy on touch. It’s also a bit dry at her hands. It becomes red occasionally when it’s hot, she is stressed and when I apply products (Aveeno and Kokoso) on her body (cream/lotion/oil).

These days are quite hot here and both I and my partner never had eczema.

I tried Aveeno daily care and coconut oil but there make her skin flare up.

When I applied the above products it looked like she was suntanned for hours!!!

However, I know she is not allergic to them as these products cleared her face acne 3 weeks ago.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you xx

Are you breastfeeding? I am breastfeeding my baby of same age and she has spots just like this on the face and neck and chest. It's hormonal. Apparently leftover pregnancy hormones coming out in breast milk.

Stop applying the products! You may well be sensitising her skin to them and make allergy more likely. If it's not bothering her leave it alone, as PP said it may well be hormonal.

Thank you both.

Her face acne (which I thought it was hormonal) cleared up a week ago.

Can it be a hormonal issue and affect the rest of the body including hands and legs? ...

Yes, I am breastfeeding her exclusively.

This is most likely baby's skin reacting to all the new things it's coming into contact with - quite normal for young babies. As it seems quite extensive I would seek advice from your HV or GP just to check though.

My LO had it on her shoulders for ages. Wasn't like the acne as was pale. It's something they grow out of. WRT acne though, I found this interesting:

As for natural baby acne remedies, breast milk — nature's wonderful food — can also be the best medicine, thanks to its antimicrobial properties. Aside from easing cradle cap and clogged tear ducts, some mothers find that breast milk can help clear up newborn acne. Consider it baby's first pimple cream!

We just had a video call with the GP who said it’s most likely eczema... and do put cortisone cream...

However, how can it be eczema if it’s not itchy?

I am totally confused... :(

Personally, I'd leave it as long as it's not bothering her. But ultimately it's for you to decide.

Looks like 'milk rash' to me. I reckon your community midwife - if you still have contact - or your Health Visitor is a good place to check as they will see it all the time. I got better advice from my HV than GP. Hydrocortisone may be needed but really not as a first port of call, it is a mild steroid and can thin the skin and 7 weeks is very new. I absolutely wouldn't put any lotions on baby or in their water. Maybe baby has some low-level allergy through something you're eating or to milk but it's still early to diagnose that. My little one was like this for a long while.
