Can you eat blue cheese if you are allergic to penicillin?

I thought penicillin mould only grew on bread - am I being a wally? Wouldn't be the first time MN has taught me a thing or two!

mistypeaks · 05/09/2007 14:24

thanks. I'm allergic to penicillin and have always wondered . . . I love cheese of all kinds and am now going to treat myself to some really ripe stilton.

Botbot · 05/09/2007 14:26

I've always been allergic to penicillin and have always eaten blue cheese, and that question has never occurred to me! Presume it's fine.

mistypeaks · 05/09/2007 14:35

It wouldn't have occured to me if some wise ass hadn't told me they'd read that I couldn't eat it. I foolishly listened and never really questioned it. Came on here and found the truth!!

MrsMcJnr · 05/09/2007 15:41

I'm allergic to penicillin but don't have the same reaction from blue cheese.

Mumfie68 · 05/09/2007 16:58

If I eat Cambazola, I feel really really sick about an hour later and usually get stomach pains/loose tummy - I have passed blood before now. The doctor couldn't say for sure that it was related to my penicillin allergy, but I play it safe and avoid it now. I haven't had a problem with any other blue cheese though - I've eaten Stilton, Gorgonzola and Blue Brie with no problems.

bubblagirl · 05/09/2007 17:03

yes i'm allergic to penicillin the quantity in blue cheese is low so shouldn't affect you i have always eaten it with no reaction

PaulaRaty · 05/09/2007 18:17

thanks for all the advice. I have told my son he can eat blue cheese but he said he didn't like the look of it - would you believe it
