Struggling with daughter and her unknown allergy symptoms!

Really struggling to find out what is wrong with my daughter. Had allergy test and waiting on the results. She is 3 1/2 and something is really bothering her.

It’s been going on for so long now. She had her tonsils and adenoids out, made zero difference.

Her main symptoms are red and itchy ears, she gets little lumps on them, she will not stop touching them. She has glue ear. She is also constantly full of thick glue like snot. It’s so thick she chokes on it, sometimes sick.
At night she wakes up swallowing and chocking on the mucus. I’ve never seen a person make so much thick mucus, it has to be pulled out. (Sorry for being disgusting) I’ve tried to remove, soya, wheat, milk, eggs. Helps but not stopped it. Infant the oat milk I’ve been using seems to be making the mucus worse.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Environmental allergens? Leaf mould, dust, grass pollen, etc? Those ones make my sinuses play up. My milder food allergies cause more gastrointestinal symptoms. And the anaphylaxis ones, well that's something else again.

Has anyone prescribed an antihistamine and an antihistamine nasal spray?

Hope you get some answers soon.

I would suggest a throat swab to check for infections. One of my son's produced the most snot for two years. He also had glue ear, grommets etc. Eventually he had his adenoids out and they swabbed him. Turned out he had three infections which often co-exist and needed very precise antibiotics to get rid.

Worth a try.

That’s interesting, mine has glue ear and adenoids/tonsils out. Removing them made no difference!

My daughter had preventative antibiotics all winter and antihistamines during the summer - helped to keep the snot at bay.

Also their sinuses etc do not drain properly until they are a bit bigger - so it's going to be an issue for a while.

J would ask the doctor for an antihistamine and an antiobiotix to prevent infections - as trying to work out specific allergens is really hard - if you can get a referral to an allergy clinic great but keep a diary of exposurs - food / environment and her response for a bit

Oh and steam might help - hot showers / inhalation etc to help clear her tubes

Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 18:24

We’ve had an allergy blood test waiting im just waiting on the results.
I just can’t believe someone can produce this mucus. It’s disgusting, like glue! I can’t seem to get an explanation what is going on.

Is there anything like cystic fibrosis going on?

Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 18:27

I have wondered that. The doc said her lungs always sound clear.

OP posts:
Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 18:28

But would that explain the itchy bumps on her ears and sometimes around her mouth?

The very thick snot thing sounds more like a bad sinus infection. Have they tested for this?

Do you have any pets?

Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 18:48

I had a dog but no longer. Made no difference. I’ve kept telling the doc it’s coming from her sinus. You can hear it in her voice. Every morning about 30 mins after getting up she does a sneeze and it’s absolutely disgusting. Reaches the floor, full of lumps held together with glue. When she is sick you have to pull the mucus out her mouth. Why is it happening?

Marcipex · 13/02/2020 18:55

I don’t know but it sounds all wrong and I think needs further investigation.
Could you film these morning sneezes and the results? In case they think you’re exaggerating.
DGD had whooping cough which was undiagnosed for months. Because she’d been immunised no one considered it. It was suggested that she film her dd coughing. That led to a rapid diagnosis.

Veterinari · 13/02/2020 18:57

@Movingon83
Cystic fibrosis can cause skin rashes too (though it's uncommon). And digestive upset
I'd definitely want her tested

whatisheupto · 13/02/2020 18:59

Yes film it and persist. Too often things get brushed off. Can you afford a private appointment?

Fretfulparent · 13/02/2020 18:59

Could you ask your GP if a sample of the mucus be sent off to microbiology to see what bug it grows.

CornishPorsche · 13/02/2020 18:59

If it's her ears, sinuses etc - what about washing powders, shampoos, soaps, clothing materials (wool etc) - anything that touches the skin?

Have you done a proper exclusion diet under a dietician, or just cut a few things out now and again?

Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 19:05

I’ve a doc appointment tomo to get referred to a dietitian. The consultant who did her bloods suggest I eliminate foods but I’m not getting anywhere. I feel abandoned and something is so not right. I’ve googled cystic fibrosis a few times, it’s very concerning!

You say she had got glue ear but haven't said if she had heard her grommets done yet?
Also when my daughter was about this age for months she had lurid green snot and mucus which smelt really bad. With antibiotics it would get better for a bit the come back. Eventually after having a good look up her nose the doctor could see something but didn't want to just pull it out in case it was an abscess or similar. She went under a general anaesthetic during which they pulled out a small price of sponge! Problem solved.
Has anything like that been looked at?

Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 19:10

No she hasn’t had grommets they want to see if it clears after all the winter bugs.
Would they not have seen something up there when they took out adenoids?

OP posts:
Movingon83 · 13/02/2020 19:12

They found the glue ear after her op which is typical! She kept getting ear infections, one consultant saw it when we went in with high temp!
