Brought Ds 2.8 a medic alert rist strap from star allergy alerts and you have to get it engraved yourself.

Do I just put anaphylaxis or do i be more specific and list all his allergens?

Do I include his asthma? I'm really not sure.

Do I put his medication?

my sister had a necklace and there was a specific symbol on the front and inside she could take a bit out to list her allergies (penecillin).

Are there a lot of things he is allergic to?
I think i would list them all. not sure on the meds thing as that could change from time to time couldn't it?

alibobins · 28/08/2007 19:29

We know he is allergic to eggs, fish, nuts and we think cats. This one has got a metal plaque that has got a symbol on it then a place to engrave it.

does his cat allergy mean he needs special treatment by a paramendic? ie anaphylaxis? I thought that medic alerts were for SERIOUS allergies/reactions like you would have from eggs/nuts/shell fish

alibobins · 28/08/2007 20:19

He had an anaphylatic reaction two weeks ago cause unknown?? so I didn't know weather to record all allergens or just put he suffers with anaphylaxis

Usually with anaphlaxis an adrenaline pen is to stay with the child at all times. How many allergens does he have? Do all trigger an anaphylactic reaction? I would list any that do and engrave that he has an adrenaline pen if required if this is the case. Or maybe he just needs piriton? How severe is it? ( I presume by anaphylaxis you mean stops breathing?)

alibobins · 28/08/2007 20:40

He's got epi-pens ans yes he swells itches and eventually stops breathing he's got piriton aswell and inhalors.

List the meds in order of use.
I also think he should be referred to a paediatrician for controlled allergy testing. To bring on an anaphylactic reaction under controlled conditions to see which one triggers what. Especially if the cause was unknown last time. Very worrying for you. I think that it would help to know specifics.

alibobins · 28/08/2007 20:53

He's under a pead and see's him at hospital every six weeks.

Thats good sorry if it sounded like telling you to suck eggs but have to read between and round the lines on here. Have they done controlled allergy tests?

alibobins · 28/08/2007 21:08

nope only rast tests.

tori32 · 28/08/2007 21:12

I'd ask if they can do controlled testing for allergies suspected of causing anaphylaxis.

alibobins · 28/08/2007 21:17

Thanks for the advice.

Welcome, hope its helped a bit.
Once you find out which allergies cause anaphylaxis I would write those on the band.
Write meds on other side.

Just seconding Kerry, we were sponsered too. DD's band has the basics on and apparently paramedics know from that they need to look for an injection pack but I also carry a steroid card and a card from medic alert with more details about medicines etc on.As an extra precaution if we are in the car I have her bag with injection pack near her and it has a big sign on saying use in emergency.

Heartmum2Jamie · 29/08/2007 20:20

Another person who's ds has a standard medic alert braclet and although we weren't sponsored, we got the bracelet and 1st years membership paid for by a chairty (ds has a heart condition)

I have not read all the replies so I am sure someone has already mentioned that space on the bracelet is limited, so try and keep it short. On ds's I was told 6 words, but managed to squeeze 7 on. Ds's says:

Congenital heart defects, hypertension, multiple food allergies. I wouldn't have been able to fit it all on it I had listed his allergies seperately. I suppose I don't feel so bad doing it that way as ds isn't anaphylactic. I also haven't listed his meds, but with medical alert I think that you can have these details stored on their database. We didn't as ds's meds changed alot at the time, especially the amount. I know that you have details like consultants, dr's, hospitals and hospital numbers stored on computer so that the person treating the child can call up and have all the info they need.

Heartmum2Jamie · 29/08/2007 20:21

I also used to store ds's meds by him and have a keyring that hangs off the side of his car seat with an outline of his medical history. I wrote it on red paper, so it can't be missed, lol!

Isababel · 29/08/2007 22:44

DS is 4, and we have engraved the following in his:

Front:

I'M ALLERGIC
Please ask my grownup before feeding me
(look in the back)

Back
Allergic to Dairy, Nuts, PEANUTS, etc
ASTHMA
Epipen and inhalers in my bag.
