Turns out I’m no longer allergic to nuts!

I’ve been allergic to tree nuts since a child
Terrible reactions and have obviously avoided contact with nuts ever since as it would only take touching a tiny bit to feel the effects

I just accidentally ate some of an almond and I haven’t had a reaction

Is this even possible to no longer be allergic?

was the almond cooked?
allergies can get better or worse over time. but I wouldn't risk it if I had anaphylaxis reactions previously.

I don't know if it's possible but I hope so! DC1 is allergic to some (not all) tree nuts and it would be great if he could grow out of it but I think the allergy specialist he saw suggested that it was unlikely, and that while people can sometimes outgrow milk/egg allergies, nut allergies tend to persist.

Probably a very stupid question, but were you definitely allergic to almonds in the first place? Or had you been avoiding them on the basis that you're allergic to other tree nuts? I really hope you are no longer allergic!

almonds aren't nuts!!! They are a seed.

I'm allergic to tree nuts and peanuts, but I can eat almonds.

I imagine your parents just told you to avoid everything as it's safer, but you may only be allergic to a few of them.

@alexanderhalexander - almonds were one of the nuts I had the worst reaction to on my pinprick tests. Along with pistachios, cashews and walnuts

I’ve always been able to eat peanuts (which also aren’t a nut)

My DS nut allergy specialist says not (Cambridge Nut Clinic).

Do be careful and keep carrying Piriteze tablets at least, our experience of nut allergies has been they are very unpredictable, one day a food item can give no reaction, next time you have the exact same item you have a bad reaction.

One of my children has multiple food allergies and we were told that whilst he may well grow out of some of his allergies, he would be nut allergic forever, so I would be very careful.
Incidentally, whilst it is true that botanically speaking almonds are not nuts (I believe they are the stone of a fruit technically) in allergy terms they are usually counted amongst the tree nuts as the cross reactivity is more commonly with nuts. (Though of course there is no universal pattern of sensitivity.) As you have had positive skin prick testing then I would continue to avoid almonds along with the others you mention, at the very least until you can talk to your doctor and maybe get the tests repeated. It is difficult to explain why you didn't react this time, but I wouldn't risk it again if I were you.
