eczema and bathtime

Does anyone have any tips on stopping scratching during bathing? It's becoming almost impossible for me to bath dd alone - I need one hand to hold her upright in the slippery bath, two to stop her scratching and another one to wash her. Distraction works a bit, but not for long enough - guess I just haven't found the right type of distraction. Any ideas? She's 8 months.

Hi Beatrice, I don't know your history on this but are you using a soap/oil that may be aggrivating the eczema?

I'm using oilatum junior in the water and aqueous cream as a soap substitute - I put it on before I put her in the bath and then wash it off. I know a lot of people have had trouble with aqueous cream, but it seems to suit her when I use it as a moisturiser. The strange thing is that her eczema is not really all that bad these days, and she hardly has any at all where she scratches most- the top of her thighs. I think the scratching is partly habit, and she scratches her thighs because that's the easiest part to reach when she's sitting in the bath.

Hi Beatrice

I had this problem for ages and still do with my dd who is 3. I now use either oilatum plus in her bath which seems to stop her scratching as much. I'm not sure if this would be suitable for your 8 month old though. There is an oilatum junior but the oilatum plus is an antiseptic and doesn't contain perfume. You could maybe try aveeno oil? Or another known remedy is to use oats in the bath, this can relieve itching. I've actually taken to showering my dd when I can as she can't stay in the bath for very long without complaining of being itchy. Re distraction, I tried to get my dd to wash her dolly while I was washing her, this seemed to work for a while.

Is it a particular place that she scratches? We found the one patch that my ds went at could either be covered with a cool flannel for the duration or we would put on some of his emulsifying cream first which seems to seal it and stop the itching. An almost cold bath worked for us, although my mum was horrified. Also pinetarsol in the water stops itching.

just been to the dermatologist yesterday with my 8 month old- he gave me some oilatum plus for her plus a cream that i've to go and get this morning so i've no idea what it's called. Personally i take dd in the bath with me. dh is on hand to lift in and out so that i don't slip. on the oilatum plus bottle it says that no other soap is required. HTH
