Montelukast / Singulair for treatment of chronic rhinitis and hives?

My dd is 17 and suffers very badly with allergies. She has anaphylactic reactions to nuts and seeds and is highly allergic also to dust mites. She has been taking an antihistamine at night time since she was around 10 and also using a steroid nasal spray. Unfortunately the nasal spray this year has started causing her some horrible spots around her nose which require a month of antibiotics to clear them up every time so she's stopped using it (we tried switching to a different type first) and is really suffering - sneezing constantly, eyes sort, lots of hives, itching all night. The GP has prescribed a stronger antihistamine but she thinks it's not as good as the older one so far. The GP is also looking into prescribing Montelukast / Singulair and I wondered if anyone has any experience of this? Or if there's anything you can think of which could be used as an alternative nasal spray with no steroid?

DD has taken montelukast for three years now for asthma, but it’s definiteiy dampened down her allergies too.

No adverse effects observed in DD, so I’d give it a try.

Please do research about montelukast.. the side effects seem to contradict themselves and also can cause all sorts of other problems....I have just taken my little boy off it (with drs advice) as his behaviour became uncontrollable and his mood swings were worrying!! They don't earn you about the side effects and if questioned don't like to admit them!! My boy has been on it twice and both time I'm sure he should of had 666 on his forehead!!!
Holland and Barrett's do an allergy balm which traps the allergens before they can enter the nasal passage( I think Morrison's may sell it too). Maybe try a herbal shop, I also found acupuncture helped a lot for me!!

I have been on Montelukast for the past few weeks and it has has significantly improved my asthma. It gave me a slight headache for the first 2 weeks or so, but I now have no side effects. I think serious adverse side effects are more common in young children.

Fozzleyplum. As my little boy can't talk at the minute I'm unsure of any effects it was doing that I couldn't see, but obviously headaches could of also explain his uncontrollable crying!!! I'm so glad you commented as post I have put on about the medication people are trying to say it's just 'terrible twos' did you get a cough with it? He seems to be coughing a lot more since he has been on it and full of phlegm

I have used it for a few years now for asthma and allergies. It helps and I notice if I stop for any reason. I take mine in the morning rather than at night due to disturbed sleep.
It can have horrible side effects, so if she does take it, be vigilant.

DS takes this. It seems to ease his symptoms. I have not noticed any side effects yet, he has taken it for 4 months.

Here's the patient info leaflet from the adult version; under 15s get a different dose and I expect their information might differ too.

The pharmacist scheduled a call a few days in to my starting on it, to see if I had had any adverse effects. It has helped improve my peak flow, which measures the effect of airway restriction, from a level appropriate to an 85 year old, to a level which is above average for a fit 51 year old.

Uncontrolled asthma can kill, so for me, it has definitely been worth the temporary slight headache.

Thank you all! I thought the thread had died a death.

She’s started it now and already noted very bad nightmares / sleep paralysis so today we’re trying it in the morning. Although she has severe asthma, this is primarily an attempt to deal with her awful rhinitis and itching at night.

I’m interested in the balm from Holland and Barret that stops allergens getting in ...
