Peanut allergy...eating groundnut oil??

My ds 3yrs has a peanut allergy..discovered when he was one and got hold of a bit of toast with peanut butter on it. Touched it to his mouth then threw it away..face swelled up etc. Anway we have been to the hosp and got all hos tests done and got his epipen etc

I have a question ...he has been eating chips from the local chipshop since he was small (only ocasssionally I have to point out). I found out a few weeks ago that this chipshop has always cooked in groundnut oil (which is peanut oil isn't it), they just put the sign up about it. (I didn't even know groundnut oil existed!!) Now he has been eating these chips without any kind of reaction for ages (they haven't changed oil as I checked with them)....just curious as to why he can't have peanuts but can eat something cooked in peanut oil? Any ideas?

Thanks
Jenna

Dd2 is also peanut allergic and the specialist said that groundnut oil is fine as long as it is refined as the process the oil goes through removes the potential allergen.

Most groundnut oil is refined, but its always best to check. This is based on a study undertaken at Southampton Uni which actually tested on peanut allergic people

The allergen in peanuts is a protien. If the oil is pure then it shouldn't have any protien in it.

Thanks :-)

Thats interesting to know. I assumed there would be a logical reason just didn't know what.

We were told refined oil was safe too.

of course he may outgrow his allergy, about 20% of young children do. If he isn't being seen every year you may want to ask for tests when he gets to 5 or 6.
