dh has these allergies, and I'm confused as when to introduce certain foods like dairy products, wheat, fish, citrus, nuts. Annabel Karmel book states "avoid high risk foods until baby is 9-12 months old" if fh of allergies. So, has anyone gone till 9 or the full 12 months? ds is ok on Farleys formula, so would he be ok with other dairy products? We have been weaning since 6 months, he's now 7.5 months. (But was 3.5 weeks prem). Have had a thread on this before, but I'm worried he's not getting enough variety or calories from full fat yoghurt, cheese etc.

DD now 4 alibo and tbh it's hard to remember exactly when I introduced things. She still hasn't had fish, which I'm very allergic to. Left eggs until about 2yrs and then just in bits of cake etc. Introduced milk first, yoghurts I think at about 10 months and cheese at 12 months. Got advice from a dietician - so you could ask too. I had horrendous eczema when little but touch wood so far dd has been relatively clear. Still avoiding nuts.

I think the general advice about nuts is to avoid giving them before the age of 3 if there's a family history of allergies. Not sure about dairy products though. Sorry.

Duh talking rubbish. Didn't introduce cow's milk until 1 year and cheese etc came later. As you can tell I'm no use on this one alibo - sorry. If I can find my old diary I'll post back.

I have asthma and lots of allergies and waited the full 12 months before introducing any dairy except for yoghurt. DS (now 3 and a half) was breast-fed for 15 months and refused to drink formula milk. When I used milk for cooking when he was 6-9 months, I used a dairy-free mix (they're easy to get hold of, mine came from a wholefoods supermarket). He had rice milk instead of cows' milk, which he still prefers. After 12-15 months I did introduce cheese (which he loves). Unfortunately, despite the above, this year he did suffer from hay-fever, but fingers crossed, there isn't yet any sign of asthma or any other allergies. When I was pregnant I asked my asthma consultant what the chances were of DS getting hayfever etc, and he said he felt they were higher if the asthma was in my family than in my husband's. Don't know if that was based on any research or just what he'd seen in his experience.
Good luck!

I would wait the full 12 months for all of the foods you mentioned alibo. there are plenty of other foods to try first. IMO at 7.5 months he is still getting the majority of what he needs from the formula. Introducing food at this stage is more about getting them to learn to eat and swallow and getting used to different textures in their mouths rather than a nutritional need.

We started with bananas, rice cereal, and applesauce. However, I soon discovered that these can all be constipating even though they are recommended in several baby books. The Baby Whisperer has a nice section on food introduction and she starts with pears which is what we reverted to when ds had problems. We also used peas, prunes, and peaches.

thanks for posting on this one again alibo, as I was about to post on the same subject.

Anyone know whether the point about getting the right nutrients also applies to breast milk? I know in theory it has everything a baby needs, but I am unable to express much, so am having to make up baby rice etc. with water, plus a bit of fruit puree to make it taste ok. I am worried that with only 3-4 breast feeds a day, dd isn't getting enough a) fluids and b) calcium. Most babies of a similar age (8 months) that I know are having all sorts of stuff made with formula (eg custard, puddings, porridge) so that their mums are sure they are getting the required fluid oz's per day.

Also, will adult gluten free products - eg pasta, be ok for children if pureed?

Utka, I am sure that your baby will take the required amount of breastmilk to compensate for the lack of other milk in her diet. I made all my ds's cereal with water, and actually most days I still do (he's 19 months and still bfed). I give rice milk as a drink some days instead of water as it has a bit of fat and calcium in as well.

Alibo - I would wait until 12 months for wheat, citrus, kiwi fruit, berry fruit and pineapple. 2 years for eggs, 3 for fish and 5 for nuts. I can't advise on the dairy because I don't understand enough about how much the cows milk gets modified to make formula etc.
