Dairy intolerant mum to be

squ1dgy · 10/08/2019 18:48

Hi everyone, I'm 5 weeks pregnant and have been dairy intolerant for 12 years. I've tried googling what's safe to drink as a milk alternative but I can't find anything..does anyone else have experience with this? I'm not due to see my midwife for a few weeks yet.
Thanx Smile

What do you normally drink? Drink that

squ1dgy · 10/08/2019 18:51

I normally drink rice milk but I read it isn't good for pregnancy, none of the other milks give a proper answer.

Oat milk tends to be recommended, especially the Oatly barista one.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2019 18:53

Rice milk shouldn't be given to children under the age of 5. I have never read that it's not ok in pregnancy

squ1dgy · 10/08/2019 18:55

I googled rice milk and 1 site said no..I guess I don't want to trust a website, I'd rather have someone who's been through it or know someone who has help.

And I'd go by uk NHS advice not US sites that have you avoiding everything

randomsabreuse · 10/08/2019 18:57

Rice milk has issues with arsenic content so is probably like shark/Marlin.

Oatly Barista is generally recommended as follow on milk for dairy intolerant/allergic children.

Yeah I made sure it was on us sites.. thank you..I switched to oat milk yesterday..doesn't taste great but it will do lol.
Thank you x

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/vegetarian-and-vegan-mums-to-be/

Suggests:
fortified unsweetened soya, rice and oat drinks as a source of calcium

dementedpixie · 10/08/2019 19:02

I was telling you not to go by US sites. NHS does not say to avoid rice milk

squ1dgy · 10/08/2019 19:04

Sorry meant to put uk not us. Thanx, I'll look at the link

I checked the nhs website and only saw allergies, didn't see the vegan option..that's great reading, thank you

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and dairy intolerant. The dietician I've seen throughout my pregnancy so far said soya is the best alternative milk to use as it has a higher protein content. She also suggested incorporating at least one soya yoghurt a day to ensure you're getting enough calcium. I don't get on with soya so use oat milk and take a calcium supplement to ensure I'm taking in enough calcium. When you see the midwife mention your intolerance to them and they may refer you on to a dietician who can talk you through any dietary concerns.

Alicethroughthelookingglass that's brilliant thank you, was getting a bit worried. I was going to tell the midwife anyway as the doctor wasn't a lot of help. Thank you for the advice x

No problem! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
