Do we really need to avoid tomatoes?

DD reacts to tomatoes touching her skin. As we are doing BLW (not by choice but she has always hated puree) this does happen. It not the same type of hives she gets when she eats egg but it turns red where the tomatoes or tomato sauce touches her face and chin. Do we need to avoid tomatoes? Will she grow out of it?

Tomatoes are quite acidic - they make MY skin red and I'm not allergic! Are there any other symptoms?

Tapster · 31/07/2007 08:21

Just red skin around the mouth not hives. When she eats eggs she gets hives. I really would like her to eat tomatoes, as we are doing BLW and I like tomatoes and they are incredibly nutritious as well as very portable. Been referred due to egg allergy can ask doctor then but I have little faith in allergy doctors from my own experience.

Hi Tapster,

My DD1 is the same and she is now 3. She doesn't have egg on it's own but is OK with baking (lucky for her) but not raw cake mixture. She gets red skin with tomato (inc. in baked beans etc), strawberries, kiwi and hummus. However she still eats all these things and the redness doesn't last long.

She has eczema and I checked with the consultant when she was small and she advised only to ban things that really caused a reaction like the egg. That's fine by me as she is veggie and a fussy eater to boot so we'd be lost without tomatoes!!

BTW she was sick when she had her MMR but not sure if it still grown on egg. She was only sick once but it's worth checking out when the time comes...

DD2 eats everything, no allergies and no eczemea thank goodness.

Thanks so much LL - will continue to give her tomatoes.

Still not sure if she is truly allergic to egg - only time will tell. I'm so worried she will have a severe reaction the next time.

Got a speedy appointment at the doctor as they are worried about the MMR - I will push for it to be done under observation. I wonder if you do the jabs individually there is no egg white then.

Tapster I didn't know about the MMR until afterwards but I think they should have asked and she should've had the jab under obs but never mind. She was just sick and her eczema flared up.

First time she had scrambled eggs her red patches bled and it was awful. Now sometimes I try her and it flares up her patches. Mind you her eczema is sooooo much better so maybe soon she'll be OK?

BTW saw you other thread about bfing strike and wanted to add that DD1 was a bit funny when I got my period but DD2 never bothered - odd. Hope the strike doesn't last and she's asking for booby again soon.

DD2 (17m) was saying 'booby, booby' and trying to get in my top yesterday when we were trying to board a plane!
