Problem getting epipens

DS 9 has a nut allergy and has epipens. To date we have had 4 - 2 stay with us and 2 at school. The last lot from school have expired and the doctor won't prescribe any more as the guidelines now state that they only have 2.

The school are not happy with this as they want 2 in school all of the time. It's not practical to drop them off each morning and pick them up - with the best will in the world this will go wrong. His allergy is severe - he had an anaphylactic shock when it was discovered.

I have asked for a private prescription but the doctor will not issue one either.

I am at a loss as to what to do. Has anyone else had this issue and found a way round it? At the moment we are sharing the in date epipen and the out of date epipen with the school but this is obviously not ideal.

Thanks

Yes we used to have a similar set up with school too. 2 for home and 2 for school (but the office kept one and dd carried the other in her school bag) . My dd has left school now so not too familiar with the system at the moment however are you sure it isn't down to the EpiPen Shortage? www.epipen.co.uk
My dd's two Epipens have gone outdated and we cannot even get new ones. Her prescription has been with the chemist since the end of April. I may have to get the doctors to prescribe a generic version instead but didn't want to cause complication using a different device but may have to soon. I would have a word with the GP again and find out if it is just due to the shortage for now.
I know I did hear in the past about schools having their own adrenaline in schools. Just looked it up and found this you may find interesting www.gov.uk/government/publications/using-emergency-adrenaline-auto-injectors-in-schools

I see your ds is 9, my dd only carried one of her own with one in the office at secondary school. I can understand your problem totally. As you need two with your ds at all times

Ask if it's because of the shortage, as there are other versions - anapen, jext pen - that are the same thing. Not in UK but if dr prescribes epi pen and chemist can't get it she just gives one of the other brands. They are all easy to use and you can get a dummy pen of each brand online to practice with.

By that I mean I'm not in Uk.

No, it's not due to the shortage. It's new guidelines because of funding.

Speak to the school and see if they will purchase them, especially if schools don't need a prescription - going by the gov site. You could help do a fundraiser or give a personal donation and then the EpiPen/s would be kept on the premises for emergency use with children with anaphylaxis. It could be a solution?
