Alternative to Carobel

Dalesgirl16 · 10/05/2019 03:04

My six week old was put in Alfamino last Friday. We gradually mixed it into the aptamil he was taking so by Wednesday he was on full Alfamino. It was then we needed to add carobel to thicken it. Since then his poo has become runny and we think he is s but unsettled by it too? Does anyone know a carobel alternative?

We use infant gaviscon instead as carobel makes him vomit

Dalesgirl16 · 10/05/2019 21:04

Thanks for answering in the middle of the night! I heard Gaviscon constipated? How much do you add to your bottle?

Nutilis powder to thicken milk. Ours was prescribed but you can buy it over the counter in pharmacies/Boots.

Dalesgirl16 · 10/05/2019 22:28

Can I know how much you add to a bottle and how much formula is in that bottle

It really depends how thick you need it. We would use the scoop it came with and put 2 in an 8oz bottle, but you can use more or less to suit yourselves. DD had terrible wind with the carobel, we used it for a few days when we couldn't get hold of nutilis. Never again!

Dalesgirl16 · 11/05/2019 07:33

Thank you very much! Can I also ask what formula you used?m

We used sma lactose free (DD is lactose intolerant, not CMPA). I remember a pharmacist didn't want to sell it to me once she knew it was for an under 2, but it had been prescribed so I knew it was safe!

Is it for reflux or do you need the milk thickened because of the swallow? If it's for swallowing difficulties then ask for an urgent referral to SALT; they are experts on thickeners - we've been prescribed multiple due to swallow issues but it really depends on the age of the baby, not many are suitable for under 3 years.

Following, my 6 week old has horrendous diarrhea on anti reflux formula (stopped the sickness amazingly well though) so put him back on His formula (hipp) diarrhea went away but back to being sick multiple times a day. Doctor prescribed Carobel, horrendous diarrhea started again. He obviously has an intolerance to carob bean extract which is what is used as the thickener in Carobel and anti reflux milk. I’m praying there is some sort of alternative

Dalesgirl16 · 12/05/2019 15:12

It is for reflux.

Is nutilus ok to use for young babies? It says 3 years plus?

SleepingStandingUp · 12/05/2019 16:12

Never caused constipation in mine, but know others have said it did.

We used to pretty much use the dose, so a dual sachet of gaviscon in X mls, can't remember what but it says in the box.

Now he has just 3 tube feeds at nearly 4 yo and he has 1 dual sachet in 120 ml milk

TobyTall · 13/05/2019 10:25

Hospital prescribed Nutilis to my DD when she was a couple of weeks old so I'd say safe for young babies.

Dalesgirl16 · 18/05/2019 18:14

My nutilis just arrived and it says it's for ages 3 and above so my husband doesn't want me to try it. We went back to the paed gastroenterologist yesterday as my baby has gotten more ill and he said to try gaviscon, change the milk to similac alimentum and wean off omeprazole and add ranitidine.

I might try to just buy thicken the alfamino formula? Has anyone else done this?

Sorry to jump in here.

My baby has cows milk allergy and has been put on Nutramigen. Last week they changed him from gaviscon to carobel and his nappies are horrific. I'd add a picture but don't know if you all need to be seeing that.

10 poos of yellow stringy water yesterday.

My worry is he also has meningitis and is just getting over sepsis too. I've taken him to the doctors three times this week because of the poos (and paranoia). And they don't know if it's all the medication, the meningitis or the carobel!

So, it's been causing horrid nappies for you too?

If it helps you, gaviscon only constipated my baby for a week until he got used to it, then he was fine... it just didn't stop him being sick with reflux.

TobyTall · 22/05/2019 16:32

I understand your dh reluctance dalesgirl16 if you have any further appointments could you ask the gastro to clarify re safety? As I said, my baby was tiny when it was prescribed by head paediatrician but I'm just a stranger on the Internet.
Jesus SPR1107 I hope your little one is on the road to recovery. The nappies sound similar to what DD had when we used Carobel and she had the most terrible gas with it too.
