Hotdog allergy?

I was at a bbq with my one year old today and a few bites in I noticed she’d suddenly got what looked like hives all round her mouth and on her cheek. Literally all she’d had was 3 bites of hotdog, one of burger and one of chicken. She’s had chicken before and while she hasn’t had a burger she’s had beef mince etc so it looks like the most likely candidate is the hot dog :/ google suggests some people can be allergic to the nitrate in hot dogs, has anyone heard of this? And what do I do now? The rash has gone now but I’m thinking I should probably still take her to the doctor? Will they even be able to test for this or will they think I’m nuts?

Just found out there’s nitrate in ham and she’s fine with that, so must be something else. I’m baffled!

Did it have ketchup on? Dd used to break out when she had ketchup when younger.

MrsKrabbapple · 27/04/2019 21:57

Sulphates? My DD's friend is allergic to sulphuates and that's just the sort of thing she can't have.

riotlady · 28/04/2019 09:32

She’s fine with ketchup, she has it on half her food xD might be the sulphates?
This is the first time she’s ever had a reaction to anything and I’m surprised there’s anything in the food that she hasn’t come across before

Has she had soy before? Some processed foods including hot dogs/sausages have soy in.

MrsKrabbapple · 28/04/2019 09:58

You can develop an allergy though. My dd was four when she first reacted having happily eaten her allergen since she was a toddler.

riotlady · 28/04/2019 10:00

Oh that’s a good point, I’m not sure if she’s had soy

Didn’t realise that @MrsKrabbapple! I guess I’m just going to have to keep an eye out for another reaction

Start keeping a food diary and take a photo of the labels as you go along. Easier than having to write all of the ingredients out like in the good old days. Puts you off eating anything once you read the labels!

You can develop an allergy at any time but it might not be an allergy so don't panic.

My DD eats ketchup once or twice a week and occasionally will come out with a rash round her mouth from it.

Langrish · 28/04/2019 10:22

What was in the bun? Lots of unexpected things find their way into flour.

riotlady · 28/04/2019 10:30

No bun, she was having a fussy toddler day and threw it away

If you were outdoors it could be pollen, stinging nettles l, all kinds of things, just by coincidence when she ate. You could do a controlled experiment - try soy initially as that's the more likely food and easy to test (have toddler allergy meds in the house), then maybe the hot dog brand? It can also be other weirder things, my dd is allergic to m&m's for instance, a bit odd.

Ds2 reacted twice to exactly the same meal in exactly the same way. Came out in huge hives up and down his body and face. We couldn't work out what it was even by eliminating various aspects of the meal. Third time he had the same meal he was absolutely fine! Sometimes things can just be a one off and hopefully that is the case for you.

The only thing we thought it might be in the end was tomato sauce as we didn't know if it had been the same brand each time. Although he's never had a problem since.

Unfortunately at this stage gp is unlikely to do anything but it's worth making a note and next time you go, mention it.

Dd2 had a prolonged period of reacting with hives round her mouth to chocolate hazelnut spread. If it didn't have hazelnuts in she was fine. Dr said to just eliminate it from her diet and gave us a bottle of portion!

Accidentally she had some a few months later with no side effects. We have since tried her ourselves again. No further reactions at present.

troppibambini · 28/04/2019 11:20

My daughter only reacted to certain ketchups (usually cheaper ones) I would just keep an eye on it.

riotlady · 28/04/2019 11:24

Got mum to dig out another packet to check the ingredients and there’s no soy. I think you’re all right in that I will just have to keep an eye on it for now and hope it was a one off mystery! Thanks for the advice
