nettle rash from ice cream/dairy?

BellaTrixyLestrange · 15/07/2007 15:59

While sitting out in the garden earlier on today my 6 month old made a grab for my DH's ice cream.

My DH went in to get something to wipe it off as it was everywhere as DS had grabbed his legs and ankles.

Before my DH came back out DS had come up in a bright red rash with white bumps like a nettle rash particularly on his hands and where he'd wiped most of it onto his legs.

We took DS to the out of hours GP and she said it was most likely a reaction to the sun rather than to the ice cream.

Now we've just came back from holiday where DS was exposed to much more sun and didn't get any kind of rash.

I'm more convinced it was the ice-cream, but the doctor said that wasn't possible.

Anybody got any experience of this?

DS had a similar reaction to eggs and peanuts when he was little although he has since grown out of it (now 2).

My GP told me that sore bought ice-cream has a lot of additives in it that can cause reactions.

potoroo · 15/07/2007 16:08

store bought I mean

Lazylou · 15/07/2007 16:09

Not related to foodstuffs, but DD recently had an urticaria type rash as a result of Benylin and now she can't have any kind of cough medicine, only simple linctus.

TheChamberofCarrots · 15/07/2007 16:14

I would have thought it was perfectly possible for your ds to get a hive like rash from the ice cream, seems strange your gp completely disregarded it

I clicked on this because my six month old ds got a similar rash on the soles of his feet and hands today at a party, they were hot and bumpy, he seemed fine and hadn't touched anything that I could see except the grass, but he was on the grass yesterday?

I guess we'll just have to see if it happens again. He does react to dairy anyway though, not that it's necessarily connected. I don't eat it because it affects him.

BellaTrixyLestrange · 15/07/2007 16:23

Hi Mrs C, Was about to post on the Jan thread to see if you had any experience of this as I know you avoid dairy.

It didn't help that by the time we had waited to see the GP the rash had disappeared completely, but she really just wasn't interested and thought we were neurotic parents wasting her time.

This is exactly what happened to my ds whenevr i tried to give him yogurt / cheese or cereal with milk (he always refused to eat any of it, prefering to wipe it all over his face). I gave up trying him with dairy and and nine months he swiped some double cream with he had a big reaction too(facial swelling, rash etc).

Has he had any dairy before? ds seems ok with butter now (although i've stopped giving him any dairy at all while i wait for Paed appointment) but milk and cream are definitly out.

Really surprised at your GPs response, it might be worth mentioning it to your HV or something as if you do need to see someone its better to get things moving sooner rather than later - i've been waiting six months for my appointment which has just been put back another month.

my 14mth ds is allergic to all milk protien and this is what happens to him if he has any skin contact with milk. If he ingests milk or any dairy he swells up and is very unwell we had to call 999 at 7mths after his first reaction but then he is an allergic child and is allergic to eggs, lentils, peanuts, nuts and sesame.

Doesn't sound like it is the sun if there have been no problems since and I'm not trying to scare you either I would just be careful with dairy.

BellaTrixyLestrange · 15/07/2007 19:12

He's been exclusively breastfed up until now.

I'm going to go and see my usual GP this week about it I think.

My ds of 8 mnths got a nettle style rash / hives just last week. Have no idea what has caused it but gp said that it was an allergic reaction to something. He asked if I had changed nappy brands, washing powder etc but had not. His rash was only on lower back on one side - bizzare!

Asked mumsnet advice - one reply was anything in garden. Though he has only just started crawling

I know that I had not given him anything different, his nursery say the same.

McDreamyGonagall · 15/07/2007 19:28

The rash is called urticaria. My DS gets it when exposed to eggs. Does the ice cream contain egg? Not wholly convinced by your doctors advice

clutteredup · 15/07/2007 19:30

My DD 6mo has a small rash on the side of her mouth which she's had for a few weeks, it recedes with cream but then returns again. It was simlarly after an experience with ice cream from a 99 cone. She is ff and eats petit filous and all sorts of cheesy food so no apparent allergy to dairy but I thought it could have been skin contact iwth the ice cream. not sure that ice cream van ice cream has been anywhere near a cow!!! haven't got round to visiting gp she's #3 so i'm a bit lax - ds we took to the hospital when he went a bit pink - would be interested to know the outcome of this thread.

clutteredup · 15/07/2007 19:31

xposted mcdreamy - does 99 icecream have eggs in do you know?

McDreamyGonagall · 15/07/2007 19:40

Not sure about eggs in 99's. Not sure what goes into them

clutteredup · 15/07/2007 20:01

a lot of c**p i'm sure DD2 bound to have reacted to one ofthe nastier chemicals.

BellaTrixyLestrange · 26/07/2007 18:21

Well the outcome is it is looking like DS is allergic to dairy.

I gave hi formula for the first time in front of my HV and GP and the reaction was pretty dramatic.

I gave him an ounce and waited for 10 mins and then gave him the rest of the carton. I was about to leave when he started looking a bit red and then projectile vomited the whole feed all over the place. He then came up in the same nettle rash that we had seen with the ice cream.

My Gp has referred us to an allergy specialist.

Hi Bella

My 6 month old had a bad reaction to milk and Oatabix last Friday, she had the rash you described on her face (this was part of the reaction). We have been referred to an allergy consultant. I would definately get the GP to look into this further.

Good luck xx

MunchiesMama · 26/07/2007 18:37

Sorry just read your last post!

Going through the same as you at the minute x

weeonion · 27/07/2007 20:43

trixy - sounds awful for you! my wee bro & sis were allergic to diary. mum managed to source them some soya based formula i think??

oneplusone · 27/07/2007 20:51

You could try SMA LF, the LF means lactose free if your DC is allergic to the lactose in milk. My DS gets a bad chesty cough if he has cows milk but is much better on the SMA LF. You can get it on prescription.

Julia76 · 28/07/2007 01:07

Could be the ice cream causing an reaction. Could also be the waether though. My ds is allergic to hot & cold weather. He can be in the heat one day & be fine. No urticaria, then another day develople a rash. Its to do with the level of histamine in the body at that particular time, so my gp told me. You will have to just monitor. My ds gets it from many of his allegies but it can be quite tricky trying to find out hat eactly has caused it.

christywhisty · 29/07/2007 12:21

DS once came up in awful hives after eating a chocolate icecream,.
However he is allergic to nuts and seeds but this is not the normal reaction.
We had spent the day at the Boat Show so could have been anything there or the seafood he had eaten the night before.
Unless you have several incidents of hives it is very difficult to know what it caused it.

wb · 30/07/2007 16:10

My ds had exactly the same reaction, also to ice cream, at 6 months.

He was tested for cows milk allergy - tests were negative. We go for a milk challenge next week, just to be sure, but the doctor thinks it was either something else in the icecream or possibly just the cold of it that made his skin react.
