3 month old with milk allergy??

My 12 week old is constantly getting stomach issues, he was originally on cow and gate and constantly had upset stomachs, often smelly and green in colour and with mucus present, so following the HV's advice switched him to SMA milk. Since doing this not a lot has changed, and we decided to take him to the doctors as it seems to me to be a milk allergy. (As I have one myself)
I suggested this to the doctor and he said that it's too soon for him to be diagnosed with one at such a young age, and could try colief drops if I really wanted to. We tried them and they helped a little, but it's still happening.

We really don't know where to go from here, does anyone have a similar experience or advice?
Do I switch him to lactose free milk anyway to see? As I'm worried about doing so if that isn't the issue.
Thanks in advance

It's definitely not too young to be diagnosed. My DS was diagnosed at 6 weeks. I'd get a different doctor and try a partly hydrolysed formula that you can buy over the counter to see if that relieves symptoms at all. Babies have such immature digestive systems that it might not be an allergy though. We were diagnosed after three trips to A&E because the diarrhea was so bad that the HV was worried about dehydration (DS had other complicating factors that made dehydration extra risky).

Colief wouldn't help if it's an issue with cows milk protein as it breaks down the lactose which is the sugar in the milk. Your gp sounds a bit dim if they thought that would be the answer to a dairy allergy/ intolerance

My baby was diagnosed with cow's milk allergy at 12 weeks but she had the symptoms from 2 weeks, so in the nicest possible way, your GP is talking out of his backside. Look into a partly hydrolysed formula as a PP said. Don't bother with lactose free or soya free version of supermarket formulas, if your child has a proper allergy they are not good enough. Nutramigen is what I used for my DD, it can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy. We had improvement in 48 hours although I hear it can take anything up to a week.

To expand, we started on partly hydrolysed but ended up with a prescription only amino acid based formula. A lot of symptoms were alieved with the partly hydrolysed though, so even if you end up on amino acid formula, the partly hydrolysed should indicate to you if it's CMPA. As with PP we saw an improvement really quickly.

Does depend on if your infant is allergic or intolerant?

Babies with intolerance can have problems digesting cows milk, and usually have bloated tummy issues, thin limbs and look exhausted, and have a slow weight gain. They usually hate lying flat on back as it hurts sore tummy, this impacts sleep.
This is due to cows milk protein irritating the valve that sits on top of stomach, and the food/ stomach
acid ratio is disturbed due to the valve not sealing correctly iyswim

But some are normal and healthy looking but scream in agony when they have a normal soft formed bowel movement. This is due to the milk protein irritating the inner lining of anus, and as there are more nerves in bowel than even the brain the pain is dreadful.

If your baby is just having a problem passing stools, this will improve pretty quickly with change to changed milk protein formula.
But depending on how long your baby has be having the upper gut issues any improvement can take some time. As food digested with out correct amount of stomach acid it can irritate the digestive system as it passes through. So healing or getting back to normal can take some time. Up to 8 weeks for some.

Or you could have an ige allergic infant, which throws up completely differing symptoms.

I think you need to try a different GP , take photos of mucus stools in nappy to simply take a mucus nappy with you.
Ask for a referral.
Dont get fobbed off, keep on going back.

Good luck.
