my ds is 6 months old and gets very distressed with trapped wind - mainly from his bottom. i may be imagining it but i seem to detect a correlation between him eating babyrice, potato (not sweet though), oats and banana so now i am terrified of giving him anything other than sweet potato, squash, carrot and courgette. i also moved him onto aptimil follow on and danone 4 month fromage frais on sunday and we had the worst night in my career as a parent - 8 hours of screaming from what i assume was tummy pain. he's been delicate and farty all week and i'm running out of ideas of what to feed him.
am i imagining these intolerances (his poo goes dark green, pellety and a bit mucousy - and he screams at night)because these foods are generally well tolerated. my gp thinks i'm unhinged..........
i moved him back onto aptimil 1st incase it was that that had irritated his gut and he's still not himself. he drinks very little milk in a 24 hour period but is in the 91st centile - should i try another type of milk incase he's lactose intolerant?

Hello Issywoo, DS had a very farty time when he was about that age, but I could never found what caused it, the only thing I can suggest is to keep a diary of what he eats and what reactions he has so maybe you can find out what is causing it. I don't know about the formula, but I have found Aptamil is easier to digest at least for DS (Was so constipated with Cow&Gate that he screamed when pooing). How much water is he taking? (poo in forms of pellets it's sometimes a sign that he needs to drink more liquids)

Good luck

does he have a milk intoloerance and need soya milk? Maybe speak to a health visiter rather than a gp.

poppyseed · 09/09/2004 21:46

In the meantime have you tried baby massage to help?

johno · 09/09/2004 21:49

i dont know if u know this but sma do a lactose free milk, u could give this a try

edam · 09/09/2004 21:53

sounds awful, poor you and poor ds. Just a word of caution, don't diagnose lactose intolerance yourself. Milk is VERY important for babies, people should never switch to soya milk without a proper diagnosis from a specialist. It's just not as good nutritionally for babies. Obviously for some infants it's necessary but it should never be used instead of normal formula or breastmilk unless there is a real, medical diagnosis.
Sermon over, hope some of the suggestions here help.

have to echo edam ... i did loads of looking into lactose intolerance in case that was my dd's prob... but wouldnt consider stopping bf until i was certain... am certain it isnt now. Always speak to GP about changing milk...also, i think I'm right in saying that babies who are lactose intolerant are also those who are most likely to be allergic to soya. Soya is a common allergy too... but dont quote me on that... I may have misread something... sure someone else here will know.

spod, i read your thread and have tried not giving fruit after a meal as the fermentation issue seemed to make sense. i also don't know if the time of day i am feeding him is causing the wind to build up at night. tonight i gave him solids at 4.45pm but then he struggled with his bottle at 6.30pm - only took 3oz. i wish he'd take bigger feeds as the milk is so important given that his diet is so limited. my gp is not really open to discussing things. after no sleep for either of us on sunday night and me being worried there was something really wrong with him we went to the gp who told me there's nothing wrong with ds but that i seem to have a problem. then i cried and he looked at me as if i was nuts and said i should see the hv in future!

just trying to catch up on threads i've inputted on....how are things issywoo? just re-read your last thread, tats awful of your GP to be like that... coincidently I had a very similar expereince with my gp lately who told me there was nothing worng with my dd..... i changed my gp... let me know how things are with your little one

tatt · 01/11/2004 05:43

all the foods you mentioned (except oats, did they have sugar with them?) are foods with a high glycaemic index value and the ones he can take are lower gi. High gi values means they make insulin levels change rapidly. Might be entirely a coincidence but just something that struck me when reading it. You might want to try mixing any high gi food you give him with a lower gi one. If he is lactose intolerant it may be temporary and he may be able to have it again in a couple of weeks. Its also worth trying probiotics as they are very helpful for digestive problems. My husband is lactose intolerant and it makes his problems less severe.

I gave my son goats milk - my daughter had soya but is now allergic to it and to nuts. There is a higher level of nut allergy in children who've had soya milk. Obviously I didn't know that when I gave it to her.

I have had great success in treating babies with trapped wind and colic with homeopathic and herbla remedies - if you live in the London area do give me a shout [email protected]
