Wheat free for nearly 4 weeks now......

You may remember my post nearly 4 weeks ago about DS being tested for sensitivities in the Health Food shop (vega testing) and it had shown egg and wheat. (Eggs we knew).

DS has been wheat free for nearly 4 weeks now and the differences are amazing;

practically no diarrhoea (have had a few loose stool days but nothing like before)

Distended stomach is gone

His poo and wind doesn't smell (we used to check his pants he smelt so bad before we thought he'd had an accident!)

Poo isn't mucousy anymore

He's not getting stomach pains anymore

He generally seems happier!

I know not everybody agrees with the vega testing but I think it this case it was spot on!!!

I have logged everything DS has eaten and what has come out (nice lol) and from next Tuesday he is going back on wheat for a month to log the differences.

I'm hoping that the paediatrician will take me seriously because I have had enough of our GP not wanting to know.

Why bother putting him back on wheat at all if it is working? I have not eaten wheat for about 3 years-no formal diagnosis but developed loads of allergies to medication after birth of DD1 then the constant feeling sick started. gave up at doctor's suggestion and results were instantaneous. Now, if I cheat, I feel sick. It's an easy thing to give up-chocolate has no wheat in it!

We are hoping to get a proper diagnoses so we can get some of the food on prescription!

Also my GP told me I was damaging DS by considering cutting out food that was unnecessary (apparently having diarrhoea since birth is normal lol)

Hi wangle - what's vega testing?

I am currently doing a trial of cutting out dairy for my DS2 (20 months) who has eczema and nasal congestion. He hasn't been tested in any way so we are just experimenting really (he had cows milk issues as a baby so it is based on a suspicion).

Would be interested in something which could give me a more concrete idea of what's causing his problems.

Thanks

Personally I'd talk to your GP again (or the paed) before putting ds back on wheat. It's been suggested to me that I put ds back on wheat and oats in order to see if he will test positive for coeliacs (I don't think he will, his dad is gluten intolerance - wheat bad oats fine - but not a coeliac). I couldn't do it to him, he would be so unwell.

The prescription thing is really annoying but honestly, I don't think I could go through it.

hippmummy - its a testing service run by our local health food shop. Its done by energy levels on the body. There is a LOT of skepticism about it (each to their own and all that) but I was desperate and my GP wouldn't listen.

It showed DS was sensitive to eggs and wheat. We knew eggs which is why I believe the wheat and gave it a go.

I paid £42 and they tested 81 foods.

If you are interested I'd ring your local health food shop to see if they offer it.

Vega Test info

This isn't the company I used but it will give you an idea of what it is.

tribpot - I know where you are coming from and I dread the thought of school summer hols and DS with diarrhoea but if this is the only way I can get a diagnoses I will do it. After all I've been fighting for this for years and am finally getting somewhere!

I am concerned about the possibility of coeliac because some days DS has had loose poo and I can't find any wheat at all in what he's eaten

My GP is absolutely useless as well grrr

thanks wangle - if the dairy-free trial doesn't work out I will certainly look into it.

hi wangle
i am very keen on doing vega testing for my 14 month old son,,,,,,
his eczema is bad,,,,,
really dont know what is triggering it.......
would you be able to let me know who you went to for vegatesting
thanks

wangle99 · 21/08/2007 16:54

rohini - I used Health Screening Uk Ltd

I think the success of it depends on how good the operative is but I would definately give it a go! They generally operate through health food shops - do you have any in your area?
