1 year old developed milk intolerance after a gastric bug

...umm how long is this likely to last?

Should I keep her off all dairy inc cheese, milk etc in cooking.

We are giving her the soya milk (eughh, the poos reak) and it seems to have dried up the diarrhea and she hasn't been sick at all since she has been on the soya.

Tried searching old threads but didn't really find anything.

Also she has small blisters on the corners of her mouth the last day or so... could that be the soya?

dunno, how do you know?

we were told to keep off all dairy for a couple of weeks and we did switch to soya (this was several years ago)

the blisters at the corner of her mouth - could they be cold sores?

I think its pretty common after a stomach bug. I only keep DS off dairy for a few days. Probiotic yoghurt may help.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/07/2007 13:49

Should really use rice milk (with added calcium) rather than soya in young children.

The blisters could be from the last cows milk she had, or she may be developing an allergy to soya too.

I think if it's just following a gastric thing then it's about 3-6 weeks you should avoid dairy for, but am not absolutely sure (we're totally dairy free as intolerance is full time, rather than gastric related).

You'll need to label check ALL processed foods if you're off dairy for a while though, as it's in loads of stuff you wouldn't necessarily expect.

CSWS i've read a couple of things before about avoiding soya but didn't pay much attention. ds is also dairy free but not a huge fan of the rice milk so i've started giving him the soya yogurts. Should they be avoided as well do you know or is it ok now hes a bit older (is 13.5 months, only started a couple of weeks ago as i'd been avoiding soya)

Keep up on the probiotics for a while, either in tablet form or yoghurt- dont worry about the milk in the yoghurts, in many epopel the probiotics balance it out anyway

Rice and soya are too low in fat for rpolonged use with a one year old. Your GP can give you a prescription- I like enfamil lactofree (its proper milk, just without the lactose) and ds3 (4 soon) still has it on prescription if he wants.

Soya considered more allergenic than lactose, so blisters could well be that.

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/07/2007 19:40

My paed (and other stuff I've read) suggested that soya yoghurts would be okay, as they don't eat them in such large quantities as they take in milk. I do offer them to my dd, although she probably only bothers with 1 or 2 a week on average.

A hypoallergenic formula is better than rice or soya milk, but many of them taste disgusting! The dietician advised us that plan A was to try and get her to take Nutramigen by mixing it with breast milk, plan B was to prescribe Pepti, and plan C was to use rice milk. We've opted for still breastfeeding twice a day, and rice milk in between, combined with a nutritious and varied solids diet.

I'm not sure whether temporary intolerance after gastric problems is usually to lactose or to milk protein. If lactose then normal lactose free milk would be great, but for regular intolerance, it is usually to the milk protein (some GPs use the word lactose just because people understand it, even if it isn't actually lactose causing the problem), which means that lactose free milk is still a no go. Hope somebody will come along who can confirm which is likely to be the problem after gastric probs.

Yes the blisters are very probably the soya. My niece developed lactose intolerance after gastric enteritis when she was about 7 months old - when we eventually worked out what it was we tried her on soya formula - this worked for a couple of days then the pain and sickness came back, plus she developed hives. My brother paid for a private consultation and was told that they should never have touched the soya as soya intolerance and lactose intolerance often go hand in hand. He prescribed "Neocate" - you can only get it on prescription. She had to take it for about 6 months and then they gradually re-introduced dairy and she is absolutely fine now.

My ds2 got a nightshade family intolerance (potato, tomato, red peppers etc) after a severe gastric bug last April. 15 months down the line, it's still there. Better, but still there. He's 4.5 now, was 3.2 at the time of the bug.

Not sure if that helps at all!

Ah yes the taste- i'm intolerant myself and the only ones i'll ahve are sainsburys free from soya (sweetened), rice milk or the enfamil- the enfamil formual is actuallyr eally creamy and delicious! its not well knows as it is American, but you can get it on prescription on request.

The yoghurts are fine- i pretty much weaned ds1 and ds3 onto them with no ill effects. Neither of them react to soya. Wysoy style formulas though I avoid as ds1 has losts everal teeth due to the sugar, and my cousins daughter lost all hers!

CantSleepWontSleep · 05/07/2007 22:21

at losing teeth!

Peachy · 05/07/2007 22:23

It's the ridiculously huigh sugar contenbt. course theya re baby teeth and its better than the alternative (and by the time ds1's intol was dx'd he'd gone from 5.5 lbs to around 4...so the alternative was pretty dire)
