What comes after Nutramigen?

My 7 month old is allergic to cows milk and takes Nutramigen formula. What would a dietician recommend he starts drinking at 3 months I.e. the point at which a child would usually be able to drink cows milk.

Thanks

Alternative milks are usually introduced from 12 months.

Would you be able to make an appointment with your paediatrician or ask for a dietician appointment?

Much depends on the severity of the allergy or intolerance. Some babies are trialled on a "milk ladder" to see how sensitive they are to dairy. Some babies are able to drink animal milks, others are better on plant based alternative milks.

A dietician can help ensure your little one has a balanced diet which may or may not be dairy free.

Hi @dannydyerismydad I'm just waiting on an appointment with a dietician. I was wondering what the standard path would be but I guess it completely depends on the baby.

Yes, the decision is usually made on a case by case basis, I understand.

I have friends with babies who started on the milk ladder and were able to tolerate cheese, yogurt and cows milk at 1. Other children remain dairy free when starting school as they can't digest it at all.

The good news is that cows milk products aren't essential to our diet (many Asian countries don't have cheese, butter or milk in their diets at all). So there are lots of alternative ways to get a balanced diet, and a growing number of dairy alternatives for families who like the taste of dairy but who have children who can't eat it.

My DD (5 months) is CMPA. We have just seen the dietician for her 1st review. Currently on nutramigen and have been advised that when she's 1 to try soya milk. Rice milk or nut based (coconut/almond) is not recommended but we could try oat as another alternative.

Our dietician gave us lots of leaflets away that explained it in great detail. My oldest (9yrs) was also CMPA but also an intolerance to soya so he had to stay on nutramigen till he was 3.

We start the milk ladder at 1yr which will be set by the dietician. Each baby is different so hopefully you should have a plan made up soon for your DS.
