Developing an allergy

Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to develop an intolerance in adulthood?
I don’t eat much dairy ( no milk in tea or coffees, not much ice cream or cheese but do like yogurt) but recently when i’ve Had a larger quantity of cows milk i’ve Had intense stomach cramps and then diarrhoea ( tmi, sorry)
I brought a Starbucks hot choc at a drive through on the m11 and honestly thought I was in labour the cramps were so bad! (Unlikely as not pg). Then this eve I ate some cheese whilst making the kids pizza for tea and the same happened ☹️
Anyway, is it possible to develop an intolerance? Can I do anything to fix it? I don’t especially want to give up dairy if possible!
Any help/ advice would be appreciated!

Short answer is yes an intolerance can be developed at any age.

I’m dairy intolerant and I can’t touch for the same reasons you stated. For me it’s just not worth it, so I’ve removed it completely.

As you don’t want to give it up, I would recommend to reduce it and then just cut it out for a short period of time, then slowly reintroduce it. There’s no fix per se, but eliminating for a while would be beneficial and then you maybe more tolerable once you reintroduce it.

You may find it’s the “harder” dairy items you can’t tolerate but may get away with small amounts. My mum for instance is fine with milk but can’t tolerate cream, too much cheese etc.

Some recommendations for you, if you decide to reduce:-

  • KOKO coconut milk unsweetened, I have this in tea as I don’t like oat/nut milks in my tea.
  • Pure sunflower spread, I would avoid vitalite it’s one of the worst.
  • Waitrose vegan ravioli (honestly can’t tell there’s no cheese)
  • Waitrose chocolate torte (its amazing)
  • for cheese it isn’t the same at all, I’ve had the KOKO one which very finely grated in a small amount is fine but it’s not great.
  • booja booja ice cream and chocolate truffles.

And order your Starbucks hot choc with coconut milk instead of Cow's Milk, it tastes like a Bounty Smile

Thanks for answers and ideas. Will try some food suggestions, especially the bounty hot choc! Really don’t want to be lactose intolerant though- so may try and cut it out before reintroducing it slowly.

Are you sure it's the lactose and not the protein?
