Excema causing top lip to swell?

Dd (3) has had mild excema since she was a baby, but it is now getting steadily worse. Everytime she has had a flare-up, it never seems to get back to where it was before. It never used to bother her much, but now she does get itchy.

Her face and neck are worst, especially round her mouth at the moment. She licks her lips alot, especially when she has just got cream on. Anyway sometimes her top lip and the area around it is swollen. Is this caused by the excema or something else?

Also is it worth getting her tested to see if there is anything she reacts to badly? If so, how do you go about this?

I haven't heard of excema in that area before. Definitely worth checking out if it's some sort of allergy though. Maybe it's because she licks her lips?

Wallace, my DD2 had quite a lot of eczema when she was little and sometimes around her mouth looked terrible - red, sore and swollen. (I have photographs!) We never had her tested, her flare-ups used to vary in intensity and location, sometimes they seemed to be emotional rather than than physical, and would usually go down after a while.

They were definitely worse pre-school although she would have flare-ups after that too. She also had asthma from 2-3 onwards and was prescribed various inhalers, but she started playing flute at 7 and that did wonders for her lung capacity.

She is 19 now and pretty much free from both eczema and asthma. HTH!

I've heard that this could be an excema reaction to a colouring used in food/drink. ds has excema and he recently developed a rash for the first time around his mouth which i think is due to the colouring in ribena - process of elimination. have you introduced any new drinks?

Hi Wallace. I can get quite bad eczema, but the only times my lips swell is if I've eaten something that I'm allergic to (fish in particular will also make my throat swell too).
Would maybe try to keep a diary of food to see if you notice anything and see if piriton syrup brings it down (which might indicate an allergic reaction??).
Obviously speak to the doc first.
p.s. Be wary of putting creams on and then letting her out in the sun as some creams can destabilise in the sun and make things worse.

p.p.s. Wouldn't expect too much of the allergy tests as they can be quite inaccurate, but ask the g.p. again and maybe contact the eczema society?

what cream are you using on her face? could be a reaction between the cream and her saliva (i find some lip balms sting, now just use vasaline). could be worth trying something else around that area.

We use diprobase and oilatum in the bath (have just started using oats)
She hasn't had any new drinks/food recently. This has happened before, then seems to go away and the come back. I think it is worst when she wakes up in the morning.
Her skin gets worse when she is ill, and she has just had a cold. I think I will take her back to the GP. I aslo like the idea of a food diary to see if there is something she is reacting to.
Thanks for the help
