Am I likely to be intolerant to dairy?

I don’t know much about intolerances but I’m starting to think that I may have a problem with dairy, or maybe it’s just ibs and only dairy triggers it.

After eating lots of cheese (for example today I had a pasta bake for an early dinner and a few hours later I had some chickpea crisps with cheese and sour cream. Half an hour after eating this I’ve got horrible diarrhea. This always happens if I eat a lot of cheese or creamy foods, there’s a pasta dish at an Italian chain restaurant that is predominantly cheese sauce and within thirty minutes of eating it I’m frantically finding a loo (I’ve had this on two separate occasions as I wasn’t sure if the first time was a big or something).

I do however eat cheese and dairy everyday so i seem to tolerate it ok in small amounts, in the last doctors have suggested I have ibs but I’ve not really brought up the cheese issue.

Do gps test for intolerances or would I have to have that tested privately? Thanks

GPs can test for intolerances to food, however you need a bit more information before approaching your GP.

Ideally, eat a very varied diet, not excluding any foods, for at least a week and during that time keep a detailed diary logging each item eaten or drunk and when. Also, in a separate colour to make it easier for analysis log any symptoms you have such as headaches, diarrhoea, etc.

Once you have a completed food diary book an appointment with your GP to discuss any patterns noted and discuss your concerns.

Do not under any circumstances pay silly money for an online test such as hair sample as these are useless.

It could be lactose intolerance - my daughter has similar symptoms. I believe there is a test, but the simplest way to test is to cut out lactose, but keep lactose free dairy, and see if it stops (or starts again if you eat lactose). She's got it following a tummy bug and so it should be temporary, but it's easily treated with lactase enzymes!

When I suspected I had CMPA I took this information from Allergy UK to the GP with me Smile
