Lactose intolerance?? I'm lost!

My dd is 10.5 months and has severe wind at night... tummy full of bubbles... lots of crying and tears. I have tried so many products, nothing helps. She is breastfed (still doing around 3 feeds a day). Have tried colief, a few months ago now, but it didnt seem to help... So is it lactose intolerance or not? Is it less common if breastfed? Can she be tested for it? Can lactose intolerance come and go? (in the sense that sometimes shes fine, no probs at all... others she's terrible and wakes all through the night). Any opinions would be a help. thanks.

I saw this but didn't feel qualified to reply, but, since no one else has,...

Lactose is the sugar found in animals' milk. This includes human milk. If a child is lactose intolerant, it's very difficult for them to breastfeed (many times they can't but it's rare). And most of the time, the cases are caused by a gut bug (or something like that) and will resolve themselves.

So, fwiw, it doesn't sound like lactose intolerance. Have you tried massaging her tummy? That worked somewhat for my son. If you want some specific moves, let me know.

My son was very similar and my HV suggested I tried cutting dairy out of my diet for a couple of weeks to see if it had any effect.
I don't think it made any differnce and besides I found it's hard enough getting enough calories when you're breastfeeding without adopting food fads.
Can't think what to suggest. I found that the bad nights got further and further apart. I hope things get better for you both soon.

i wish the bad nights did get further apart, but they are every night. JJ, I have tried massage, does seem to help sometimes... would love to know some specific moves, thanks.

My dd had terrible reflux and wind. I found that it got better when I started solids at 6 months and increasingly better as I reduced the bfing. She is now 23 mo. and has no problems at all and drinks lots of milk.

our dd seems to have got worse as time goes on... no probs like this for first 6 months when she was exclusively breastfed

when my dd was born i was feeding her cow & gate premium she suffered with terrible trapped wind, stomach was bubbling if you felt it, and screamed after EVERY feed... i told my hv and was told it was colic i tried infacol and coleif and neither worked i did some research my self on the internet and the signs of lactose intolerance is quite similar to colic EXCEPT.. babies with lactose cry after every feed not just at night... i went to my g.p and asked him to prescribe sma LF which i had read up about and it worked a treat from the 1st bottle!!! she was a completely different baby.. but that was when she was 3mth to 6mth they usually do grow out of it by 6mth and she has!!! i was quite wary though but gradually introduced sma gold and she is fine....the only thing i am not sure about is the fact that your little one is alot older if i was you i would go and talk to your g.p as i personally feel that h.v's are hopeless, i sruggled for 8 weeks with my daughter with the screaming etc infact i was diagnosed with pnd which i feel was because of the feeding probs i had with her (sorry this is so long) hope it helps

thanks lilsmum... i did a bit more research too, and since dd hasnt actually improved by cutting out dairy, I'm re-introducing it... and like you say lactose intol babies cry after every feed. my dd doesnt. She only has the wind problems at night. So i dont think she is lactose intolerant. This doesnt help me establish the cause of her terrible and very painful wind. I'm trying wheat-free now... a few people have suggested to try. Cranial osteopathy helps... but cant help wondering if there is something more that is wrong. Since seeing the CO ontuesday, she seems better... but tonight theres bubbles there agian. Like you, I can and feel bubbles in her... it is so depressing.... it really does get me down. I know she wants to sleep too...she doesnt have sleep problems. Glad your little one is better. I did ask my hv today...clueless unfortunately. i am resisting going to the GP in case she says it is lactose intolerance and i should stop bf'ing. I am convinced dd isnt lactose intolerant. thanks for replying.

My DD is 2 and has a swollen tummy, which started normal in the mornings, she has wind, and pale stools, She screams at night with pain in her tummy. I took her to the doctors a few months back and she had to have blood taken for a Coeliac screen, which was negative. I took her back yesterday and the doc thinks she is Lactose Intolerance and has told me to take her off dairy products. I brought some Soya milk for her but she is refusing to drink it. She loves yogurts and icecream, and I am not sure how to go about it all TBH.

spod, i hope you get this sorted out soon, i can totally relate to the upset and stress it causes you when your baby is like this... i used to cry with her it was awful to see her in pain and not know what it is or how to help...i know the 8 weeks i went to hell and back with my dd i just cuddled her as that was all i felt i could do,i felt totally useless. it is worth checking things out on internet though as i now count my internet as my hv and doctor lol let us know what happens
