I honestly think it's the fuss we make about it that causes the problems, I can remember eating in secret as a child as chocs and sweets were such rareties and I have always been a bit overweight and don't know when to stop whereas my DD (albeit still very young) does stop before she's even finished a small bit of cake or a mini finger of fudge as it's not a big deal that she can have them after her dinner.

It's the balance that's important, as part of a sensible and balanced diet treats have their place but the obese kids you're talking about don't have a balanced diet, they're eating Turkey Twizzlers and chips with sugary-pop and don't get 5-a-week let alone 5-a-day. You're preaching to the converted, if we care enough about our kids wlefare to sign up to Mumsnet then we probably have enough sense to feed our children properly. It's not a class thing, it's education, although sadly this often goes hand in hand in this country.

was that to me?????

3andnomore · 01/06/2007 13:54

ooops just realised that must have been to Xenia, possibly?
Ignore me....am not with it today, I think!

Mum07 · 01/06/2007 13:56

No, i think we were typing at the same time! Somebody else brought up the 'class issue' yesterday and i just wanted to address it as I grew up in a council flat and feed my child as well i can, i even get called poncey for the amount of organic i buy.

noddyholder · 01/06/2007 13:56

My ds has been brought up with organic this and free range that and has never had an excess of sweets blah blah but he is 13 now and I often find empty packets from the worst things imaginable stuffed into his pockets and I know he goes to burger king when he is out with his friends who are all frightfully middle class boden wearers!A little of what you fancy.........

Mum07 · 01/06/2007 13:57

3andnomore, spot on!

Mum07 · 01/06/2007 13:59

Noddyholder - exactly, I have no doubt my offspring will be regulars at McDonalds and enjoy WKD Blues but at least we start them off right!

Kinnerton do a dairy free bar which is made in a dairy and nut free factory. It is really yummy and tastes halfway between milk and dark chocolate so should be suitable for a young un. Also my local tesco do dairy free chocolate buttons, which i buy for myself which are in the free from aisle.

TooTicky · 22/05/2008 13:24

Plamil are a totally dairy free company. Try health food shops.

Oh, and not all carob is dairy free.

jennifersofia · 22/05/2008 13:30

Try Booja-Booja chocolate - vegan and generally good chocs, esp. truffles - available at Selfridges, health shops and some Sainsbo's (or at least used to be).
Not to offend Plamil or carob lovers, but in IMHO, they are both yuck yuck yuck. (Might put kid off 'chocolate' though..)

MetalMummy · 22/05/2008 22:32

The dairy free chocolate buttons are yummy, they are made by Humdinger and they also make a rice crackle bar (not bad) and a tangerine bar which tastes just like Terrys chocolate orange (yyuuummmm)

mamailee · 11/03/2009 21:21

Green and blacks chocolate has changed its recipe and isn't vegan anymore...
Health food shops d some great vegan chocolate that isn't dark though, including chocolate mini-eggs, and smarties!

back to the original post, do you live in london or near any major jewish community? if you go to their grocery shops they haave load of chocolate labeled parve which means dairy free. Also the bookshops will have loads of dairy free receipes. The reason is that religeous jews seperate milk and meat and wait a few hours after eating meat before they eat nilk. So there is loads on the market that caters for that! You could probably also order online.
