Hello,

I've been told that I need to go completely dairy free today whilst breastfeeding as my DS has a dairy intolerance.
Of course happy to do it, problem is I have such a dairy heavy diet and love my chocolate, biscuits, yoghurts and cheese! Basically looking for recommendations from anyone dairy free of great snacks and things so I don't feel like I'm missing out totally! Thank you

There’s quite a few biscuits in the regular free from aisle which are dairy free. Ginger nuts, rich tea etc. Have a scan of labels. I haven’t really found a lovely dairy free chocolate but the moo free is ok. If you are a pesto fan, sacla do a good dairy free one.

Lots of options for dairy free yoghurts in the supermarket - either soya or coconut based and same for milks. There are some in the chilled aisles as well as long life. We like oatly on cereal or Koko light (coconut)

It’s easy to find dairy free sweets - the haribo types should be df.

Depending where you shop, the free from aisles are full of tasty things but tend to cost more than the regular aisles but you just need to do more label searching.

Cornetto now do a vegan ice cream and there are lots of other soya based options too!

Good luck! Hope it helps

Sainsbury's are the best for chocolate brownies, biscuits etc, they also do a decent garlic and herb fake cheese spread. The cheddar is interesting though, I'd probably just cut out cheese and replace with other things because it's not great.

Tesco do a good range of yogurts

Oatly milk is good subitute for milk and they do a barista which is good in tea/coffee. They also do a single cream that's ok.

Lots of Bourbon biscuits are dairy free.

Moo free chocolate is yummy - they do various flavours. Available in Morrisons and Sainsburys.
Violife cheese is good, they also do a pizza variety which is good for.... pizzas! Tescos stock it.
Oakley do ‘milk’, but also do custard and single cream equivalent which is good for pasta sauces etc. Tescos stock it.
Tescos, Morrisons and Asda all do their own dairy free chocolate too.
Tescos do yummy chocolate mousse in their dairy free section, and chocolate soya pots.
Lots of alpro yoghurts available in most supermarkets.
It’s a pain, but as others have said, lots of biscuits and cakes are actually dairy free... Oreos used to be, but we’ve not had for a while so double check! Often the supermarket own brand biscuits are more likely to be dairy free than named brands.
Good luck!

Oreos, party rings, Duncan’s of deeside shortbread, ginger nuts, bourbon creams, a particular type of Fox’s chocolate chunk cookies, loads of stuff in Free from section inc millionaires bites, rocky road, tiffin.

I alps like moo free chocolate, plus all the supermarkets do their own brand dairy free bars/buttons.

So many biscuits that you can have - peas, bourbons, nice biscuits, ginger nuts etc etc

It's all very easy nowadays, with most supermarkets having a free from section & a chilled section for yoghurts/milk/cheese - you'll be fine!

Vitalite is a good spread btw for toast/sandwiches. A lot of people have been getting it for years not realising it's dairy free.

tinyradish · 12/07/2018 07:02

*oreos not peas! Although peas are fine too Grin

Alpro yoghurts are nice. Sainsbury's do a vanilla dairy free ice cream in a hexagonal pot that is lovely!
The alpro vanilla pudding is gorgeous.

Another thing to watch out for is soya - around 50% of babies with a dairy allergy also have a soya allergy. It’s therefore often suggested to cut out both dairy and soya for 3-4 weeks (can take 2-3 weeks to clear from your milk) and then reintroduce soya to see if there’s a reaction. Tbh soya is a bigger pain as it’s in bloody everything - especially dairy free things! You soon get used to it though and there’s a “dairy and soya free uk” group in Facebook which is helpful. You soon get used to it at home but eating out is a pita.

Tesco have the best fridge and freezer sections for free from food. They do own brand dairy free 'magnums', toffee cones, strawberry cones, frozen chocolate eclairs, chocolate gateau, garlic bread, dough balls etc. In the fridge loads of different types of yoghurt and own brand desserts and cheeses.

They do great flapjacks in the grocery section, tray bakes plus dairy free 'cheese' nachos.

Sainsburys do the best snacks in the grocery section - all sorts of chocolate bars and cakes.

It's a pain being dairy free - 11yo DD is anaphylactic to milk and dairy products -
but it's getting better to shop for her each year

buggedby · 12/07/2018 07:18

I was also going to say cut out soya. DS is allergic to both and eggs.

I missed dairy initially but you soon get used to it. Almond/coconut milk in coffee is nice, I can't have oat milk as I'm gluten free but hear it is nice in tea. DS likes oatly cream in pasta, sauces etc. They do a whole range of creamy oat fraiche, custards.

Most breads have soy but there are a few that don't (Ocado, Lidl and Tesco all do one).

Lindt dark chocolate is dairy/soya free, makes a nice chocolate sauce with coconut cream.

M&S do coconut pots and yogurts that are lovely. I do overnight oats with them.

I didn't go fully back to dairy in the r d as I felt much better without it and there's lots of good alternatives theses days. Cheese you just have to forfeit but it would be forever.

Artesia · 12/07/2018 07:20

A lot of dark chocolate is dairy free. Waitrose dark choc chips are great for baking, and if you need a treat, hotel chocolat dark chocolate is definitely dairy free too. It’s great for gifts too as they do lots of their cute Easter/Xmas chocolate things in white, milk or dark so all three of my boys can have the same chocolate bunnies/Santas etc, just different colours.

Also, pizza express and Zizzi both do really good dairy free pizza. The “cheese” is by far the best we have tried. So much so that I tracked down the brand they use and ordered it on amazon!
