shish · 24/05/2007 13:18

My 11 month old ds has patches of excma. I used boots factor 50 kids sunblock on him yesterday and his pathces of excma look like the bubbles you get when something plastic has burnt. Which is the best sunblock for kids with excma???

you can get a lavera kids sunblock that's specially designed for sensiive allergy skin

i haven't used it but have used their other kids one and it's very good

ScottishThistle · 24/05/2007 13:20

E45 do a suncream!

Bergaderm was developed for skin conditions like ezcema, it's pretty easy to apply too as it's a mousse. I used it last year for ds and his skin was fine (although is ezcema is very mild anyway). It is very uncomfortable if it gets into the eyes though, so watch out when you're applying it. This year I am using Dr Hauschka (because of the issue of ds rubbing Bergaderm into his eyes last year) and it's very good, but very, very expensive.

PinkTulips · 24/05/2007 13:25

very expensive

lavera isn't cheap either mind so i'm not one to talk

herbiemom · 24/05/2007 13:27

You might need to experiment with a few until you find one that doesn't irritate too much. DS1 has mild excema and we tried high factor suncreams and sunblocks - all made his skin flare up badly. I tried various organic/sensitive skin suncreams but again these irritated him.

We now use Nivea children's suncream - factor 20 or 25 (can't remember which) and this doesn't seem to be too bad for him. The higher factor creams make it worse. It's tough isn't it?

BettySpaghetti · 24/05/2007 13:28

Can you get it on prescription?

We've only recently experienced the nightmare of eczema and came out of the doctors with various creams and bath products but I never thought to ask about suncream.

PinkTulips · 24/05/2007 13:29

they do say that for eczema you should use lower factor creams as the chemicals make them quite harsh.

that would be why if you need a high factor cream a natural one like DrH or lavera would be best as they're made from plants and minerals

ScottishThistle · 24/05/2007 13:31

I've got very sensitive skin & I use SIMPLE sun cream.

aDad · 24/05/2007 13:34

lavera stuff v good. My dds dont react to it.

And it's coloured so you can see where you have spread it easier (but soaks in).

Costs about £16 online but lasts quite well.

PinkTulips · 24/05/2007 13:43

oooo, cheaper in my health shop so, 17 euros so about 11/12 pounds

aDad · 24/05/2007 13:53

i think there are 2 sizes - so maybe it's the difference between larger and smaller size bottle? If not I am coming to your local shop!

PinkTulips · 24/05/2007 13:53

you'll have to come to galway

they are cheaper for alot of things than boots or the supermarkets so maybe i'm just lucky!

aDad · 24/05/2007 13:53

(I'm guessing that's ireland though!)

Nemo2007 · 24/05/2007 13:54

I use Aveeno suncream for my lot and DD1 has bad excema. I bought it on ebay from usa as it was £10 for 3 tubes compared to £10 for one tube here!!!

aDad · 24/05/2007 13:54

x posts!

bran · 24/05/2007 14:46

Nemo, where did you order your Aveeno suncream from? I use the lotion and bath oil for ds and it's really helped with his ezcema, but I can't find the suncream anywhere. All the American websites that I looked at either wouldn't ship internationally or charged a fortune for shipping.

Nemo2007 · 24/05/2007 19:52

bran I looked on ebay..lol there was a bloke selling loads of it..hold on will look.

Nemo2007 · 24/05/2007 19:59

there is one selling 2 tubes of spf 55

cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-3oz-AVEENO-CONTINUOUS-PROTECTION-SPF45-FACE-SPF30_W0QQitemZ110130605908QQihZ001QQcategoryZ31774QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

just email the sellers and ask them how much shipping is to uk and to mark package as a gift. Thats all I did and it was here within a week!!!!

runnyhabbit · 24/05/2007 20:04

Ds1 suffers and we've gone through countless suncream. Didn't know that high spf is more irritable. A pharmacist friend did tell me that there are suncreams available on presciption (E45 is one of them)
Think I would prefer something a bit more natural tbh, but will try anything.

BeatrootandBenedick · 24/05/2007 20:07

I put vaseline on before putting the suncream on. seems ot help. and also helps with chlorine in the water which effects my son

Cappuccino · 24/05/2007 20:19

agree with herbiemum

we bought something super-expensive and she was still allergic to that

we ended up with a regular brand

try different cheaper ones to see what happens first - maybe ask a few friends for a squirt of theirs? it might be that a different high-street one would work

bran · 25/05/2007 12:34

Thanks for those links Nemo.

shish · 25/05/2007 14:57

Wow!! Thank you so much for the huge and super fast response. I will go out and experiment. We're going on holiday next week so I hope I find something suitable soon

Can I ask, what did the reaction your children have to suncream look like? I'm pretty certain suncream is the trigger for ds's ezcema on his face (see my other thread) but the GP was vague and a bit dismissive and said to carry on using suncream.

Ds came out in a rash that has red spots occasionally with white heads, it doesn't look like my image of ezcema (I thought it was drier than ds's rash)
