My DD is in the process of being tested for either coeliacs or a wheat/gluten intolerance. She's also 9 and has been having problems for the past 12months.

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 19:28

hi hennipenni has your dd had her gut biopsy yet it not as bad as it sounds xxx

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 19:33

no, it's along story but she hasn't had the antibody blood test yet, her peadiatrician says she has a very convincing history and would be very surprised if it came back negative.

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 19:35

wat are her symptoms hennipenni

OP posts:
DaisysGotABigBump · 15/05/2007 19:36

Not my kiddy...just me. It's a right royal pain as an adult, so I can only imagine what its like with children, especially when they're at school and perhaps being offered all sorts of sweets by their mates.

You have my sympathies

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 19:38

well, it's a long list! here goes...
Mouth ulcers, joint pain, muscle pain, lethargy and tiredness, abdominal pain and distension, depression, headaches and itchy skin. The only symptoms that she doesn't have are the bowel ones.

What were your DDs? How did she deal with it all?

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 19:45

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 19:54

ktm, that must be awful for your dd. Dds school has been nothing but supportive, even down to organising all her food on a residentual trip.

The sweets thing we got around by supplying her own- if the other children give her sweets she just swaps them for something out of her box and lets her teacher have the others.

Although she has not yet been diagnosed she's on a strict gf free diet (with peads blessing)as I couldn't stand to see her so poorly any longer. She's got to go back on a normal diet after half term though.

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 19:56

it awful when kiddies are ill i want take it all away and me to have it instead

OP posts:
ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 19:57

why is she going back on normal diet xxxx

OP posts:
hennipenni · 15/05/2007 19:58

No, I know that they don't all match but as soon as we reintrouced gluten after christmas they all came back. You don't have to have to be symptomatic at all- some poeple are diagnosed just through being aneamic.

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 19:59

Sorry, going back on a normal diet so she can have the antibody test.

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 20:01

sorry did i speak out of line i wasnt trying to tell you you wrong sorry

I know its different in kids, but I was pretty asymptomatic most of my life and was only diagnosed at 35. Looking back though I had recurring bouts of gastro-intestinal problems all my life, and have had several outbreaks of DH which were put down to herpes/chicken pox/shingles etc at the time.

I'm really feeling for your DDs. My DS has always had pretty pale poos and gets really bad mouth ulcers and very stinky breath if he's run down, but bloods came back OK and his iron level, although low, was deemed normal. Mind you, he does eat a lot of gluten free foods with me as I can't be bothered cooking two lots of pasta etc. I'm keeping an eye on him and also hoping that my LO due next month is OK!

Good Luck with it all, and I know it seems harsh putting your DD back on gluten, but it is the only way they can be sure.

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 20:06

No you didn't speak out of line. I used to be a trained nurse before I saw the error of my ways When she first started with the symptoms something rang a bell from my training so I did some research.

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 20:08

How thick am I Daisy? I "spoke" to you on some of my other threads and I didn't realise you were expecting!! Congratulations and I hope it all goes well.

DaisysGotABigBump · 15/05/2007 20:11

ktmoomoo...not everyone has bowel symptoms...a friend of mine's sister didn't have any bowel symptoms at all, she just lost shed loads of weight to the point that her GP was trying to tell her parents it was an eating disorder. And although I had various symptoms throughout my life, the bowel ones weren't the major factor....it was only after a bout of food poisoning that my bowel symptoms got bad and made me see the doctor.

I think it can also be less cut and dried in children as well, from what I've read.

ktmoomoo · 15/05/2007 20:14

Cheers hennipenni...its been quite difficult as I keep on having craving for hot buttered toast......Sainsbury's do some GF muffins which are really nice, but it's just not the same!!

Gosh I must come over as some sort of coeliac evangelist....chasing people around the boards!! I didn't recognise your name, sorry ...softened brain due to pg hormones!!

hennipenni · 15/05/2007 20:17

people don't remember my name in real life so don't worry about it lol. I spoke mainly to clerkkent I think.

KTmoo, I would step away from the computer...this site is very very addictive!

DaisysGotABigBump · 15/05/2007 20:22

Very addicitve. I can't decide whether my backside is sore from sitting here all day, or from LOs head boncing up and down on my innards. I wasn't too bad to start with, but now I'm on maternity leave I can't resist....beats nesting hands down though

ktmoomoo

You are mistaken about the symptoms of coeliac disease. In Hennipenni's list "Mouth ulcers, joint pain, muscle pain, lethargy and tiredness, abdominal pain and distension, depression, headaches and itchy skin" only joint and muscle pain are unusual. Once your body stops being able to absorb vitamins and minerals, a whole host of things can go wrong that are not to do with bowels. See Dangerous Grains by James Braly - he lists over 150 ailments that can be connected to gluten sensitivity.
