I took my dd to the drs the other day because she has had a bad cough for about 5 weeks now, the gp told me her chest was clear and that she has asthma. He feels she is too young to have inhalers and to just keep an eye on it.
Tonight she was coughing so much she got alot up off her chest and then was sick through coughing bless her. I am going to go back to the gp in 3 weeks to get her reviewed, any thoughts or advice please

She is 20 months, she seems quite weezy today but not distressed by it.

My youngest had her first attack at 6mths old, ended up in hospital and was given inhalers then. She suffers everytime she's ill and everytime the weather gets damp and she's had a couple of overnight stays. I pop her over to the local A & E for nebulising when really bad but the inhalers are really good especially since we had the preventative.

Talk to your Doc again, or another Doc. Ours said they can't formally diagnose asthma until 3yrs of age but will treat it as they see it before then. Our GP and consultant have both said babies that suffer this young quite often grow out of it at a young age too - some by 3 or 4yrs! .

Hope your dd's feeling better.

20 months too young to have inhalers? That's rubbish. Go back and get some treatment for poor little one

Asthma is rotten but it can be controlled quite easily

My son has had inhalers since he was 4 months old

DD has had an inhaler since she was younger than that, 16 months I think. It's not much fun getting a child that young to use one, but it does work.

I think they can't formally diagnose until three or so because the lung capacity tests require comprehension and compliance with instructions from the child, not sure though. I have tended to tell people that DD has an asthmatic response to colds/chest infections etc, she was susceptible to the latter for a while, and they would tend to make her very wheezy and unwell.

She is currently on only her second proper cold in eight months or so, and neither has gone to her chest, so it's possible she's grown out of it (though DH had first asthma attack at age 5 so am not discounting the possibility she will grow back INTO it).
