Our DD (13 months) has been prescribed nutramigen and hates it. Even if I cook with it she knows!

What are our alternatives? I've heard people with CMPA can also be allergic to soy milk too? Is almond milk a bit of a strong flavour?

Are there any wonderfully tasty milk alternatives?

She's was around 2 and a half when I started trying her. Little and often was key for us

EclecticDream · 02/04/2018 09:21

DH tried the milk this morning and said it was awful. I don't know if she's a bit old to get used to it as she knows what food should taste like now! She knows it tastes like crap.

I'll try the oat milk today.

How about rotating different milk substitutes to give a more balanced intake of nutrients through the week? There are loads. Ecomil do quinoa milk, rice milk, almond and oat milk IIRC. Then there's hemp milk, 'Good Hemp' stocked in lots of supermarkets. 'Koko' do unsweetened coconut milk and sweetened coconut milk.

There’s lots of things she can have if she’s DF, I suppose it depends on your other child’s allergies too though.

You can make these blueberry pancakes with a milk alternative and you can cook these banana pancakes in veg oil instead of butter. Other good breakfasts are avocado on toast, smooth nut butter on toast, toasted cinnamon & raisin bagels with vitalite, toasted bagel with smooth nut butter, honey and banana, porridge fingers, sausage and beans (just check the sausage doesn’t have milk in and cut lengthways).

For snacks, hummus and raw veg, smooth nut butter spread on apple wedges, violife cream cheese on Scottish oatcakes. Dried figs are a good source of calcium too.

Lunch. There is still lots of things she can have. Sandwiches, check all breads and processed meats, eggy bread, pitta pizza (violife make a cheese for pizza), wraps, soups.

Tea spag bol, roast dinner (Bisto best is DF and you can make Yorkshire’s with alternative milk), fajitas. You can use mayo or oatley cream to cool down spicy food. Lidl’s mayo is DF. Toad in the Hole again can be made with alternative milks but check the sausage is DF. Cottage pie, you can add things like pure or Vitalite to the mash. Spanish Omelette, Jamblaya, Super Veg Pasta.

Hope that’s enough inspiration Smile

Look at the nutritional content of Nutramigen and then see if you can find other ways of getting these nutrients into her diet from other sources. Chia seeds, dates, leafy greens, sesame seeds, cook with bone broth... there are other ways of getting nutrients in. Lucy Burney's optimal nutrition for babies and toddlers is useful on this.

This is really useful advice. Thanks so much for taking the time to share it.

I must say, I've been feeling a bit swamped by it all, especially with both children having allergies and being so young.

I work full time and their nursery have been amazing with catering for them and also passing on ideas for us to try at home.

This has been really helpful.

If you’re not getting oat milk, definitely get Oatly Barista as this isn’t nicer than the other coffee versions. We all have it instead of milk now.

Dontbuymesocks · 03/04/2018 20:55

Argh, not coffee versions, It’s nicer than other OAT drinks!

EclecticDream · 03/04/2018 21:12

Haha, I was trying to decipher what you meant. I was sure you wouldn't be recommending coffee to my 13 month old. Grin

Neocate is much better than nutrimigen.

EclecticDream · 03/04/2018 21:17

Can you buy neocate over the counter? To try it before I get a prescription. And is it suitable for +1s?

I could google but 🤷🏼‍♀️

We use koko long life milk. DD is now 4 and can have cooked milk and butter, so we've moved on from no dairy at all which is great. I can cook white sauces for fish pie, lasagne etc, plus pancakes / yorkshire puds with cows milk. So keep trying little bits now and then.

Also, I use hovis best of both bread, it contains added calcium (all white flour is fortified with calcium but this is even more so). I emailed them to check, it contains 478mg per 100g, which works out to 179mg per medium slice (compared with 260mg per 100g in standard white bread). A bit of almond butter on it adds some extra too.

Good luck!

Hughpughbarneymagrew · 03/04/2018 21:55

You can buy neocate over the counter but it's $$$ (I think about £45 a tin) it's one of the most expensive hypoallergenic formulas so you won't get it prescribed unless DC can't tolerate the cheaper ones.

My son is under a dietitian for multiple food allergies and she recommended oatly barista.

I highly recommend the Facebook CMPA support groups. Loads of good help and ideas on there.

HangtheblessedDJ · 03/04/2018 21:56

Im not sure whether you can buy it. They're not keen to prescribe as its very expensive.

earlybirdhasanap · 03/04/2018 22:15

My daughter has oatly. I get it off amazon.

Zeze247 · 03/04/2018 22:27

Goat milk can often be fine too

Dontbuymesocks · 04/04/2018 16:50

Jeez, I don’t know why I seem unable to post on this thread without typos! I mean goat’s milk of course.....

Swizzlegiggle · 13/04/2018 05:24

I'm not sure that Neocate tastes any better than Nutramigen. Both my DDs were prescribed Neocate and both loathed it. I have a battle with DD2 every bottle to drink it and I've tried everything to disguise it but she is no fool!
With DD1 we used soya 1 plus for awhile but she wasn't too keen so switched to Oat milk so recommend the advice of previous posters to give it a go.
Good luck!
