New dairy free Adult - which milk to try?

New to being dairy free. Intolerance to Cows milk and Lactose.

What milk replacement is good to try in coffee? What is good in Porridge?

Have tried Oatly, did not like in coffee but porridge was ok (oats with oats).

My local shop sells Soya milk and Goats milk - can Goats milk be used? Would it not contain lactose?

Goat's milk has quite a distinct taste - I wouldn't have it in coffee. Soy milk is ok for coffee (as long as it's not piping hot, as it can separate.) almond milk is also quite nice.

I've just tried cashew milk. It was ok in coffee, less ok in tea.

MinnieMousse · 12/03/2018 07:57

I like almond milk best. I buy soya though because it's cheaper. To be honest, none of them are great in tea or coffee but soya probably the best.

CMOTDibbler · 12/03/2018 08:03

The oatly barista edition is really good

itsjess · 12/03/2018 08:03

Coconut milk is great in porridge and I have almond for everything else

ColdFeetAndHotCakes · 12/03/2018 08:06

Goats and sheep's milk both have lactose in. Hard cheese (eg. Parmesan) and butter have very little lactose in naturally but I think most goat's cheese is too soft to be any good for you.

If I can't find lactofree milk I generally have unsweetened almond milk.

I’m resigned to drinking tea black as nothing else tasted right.
I like oat milk on cereal but it makes me so bloated that I’ve had to give up. Almond milk was ok but was really expensive & ive not tried soya milk (I’m suspicious of too much soya for some reason).
Lactose free milk is definitely sweeter than normal milk but I find if it’s in a recipe it tastes fine & I do put it on cereal

Thanks, this is helpful. Glad to see I am not the only one struggling to find something that works in coffee/tea. Maybe a good side affect is that I will drink less coffee.

I like unsweetened almond, but i have adjusted to black tea and coffee. Coconut milk gives me a tummy ache after a while, soya is another allergen for me. Ben and Jerry’s banana dairy free ‘ice cream’ that is sold in my tescos is lovely 😊

Lifeaback · 12/03/2018 17:26

Almond milk is nicest in coffee, my tip is to buy a frothing wand (you can get one for a fiver in Argos)- the texture of a frothy coffee distracts from the non dairy taste. You can buy alpro barista milks on amazon and they work well in coffee too

Depends on what you're reacting too - my son is allergic to the proteins in cow's milk but is fine with sheep and goat dairy products.
I don't mind goats milk in cereal, coffee or even to drink but I've always had skimmed milk so maybe that's more similar. Plus goats cheese and manchengo mmmm
There's lot of dairy free alternatives now - do check labelling as it's very surprising what they sneak milk powder into... Even some makes of bread!

limitedscreentime · 23/03/2018 08:55

Alpro oat is the only one I get on with, doesn't curdle in hot drinks, tastes ok in coffee and bearable in tea.

I quite like the almond coconut mix for cooking curries, but would use now that regardless of the df!

I've been dairy free for 18 months. My most recent fav was hemp milk until I found rice milk. I personally think it's the closest to cows milk & would happily drink it straight from the carton.
