Lord knows, MrsWho. Been out walking in the country? It sounds a bit like a horsefly bite, but I think the swelling you describe is a bit large for that.

best to get it checked out. my friend go pricked by a thorn and her thumb got infected it required really strong antibiotics.

MrsWho · 05/05/2007 19:17

Went riding on Weds but nothing before Friday am and I usually swell up earlier than that! Also usually the cream works

Definitely sounds like a bite or cut/splinter thats become infected.

DP had this happen to him a a while ago. His arm just became very red, hot and swollen and, if I remember correctly, the veins became really prominent- the GP prescribed some heavy duty antibiotics.

hopefully not infected but if it is the sooner you get it checked the better. friends has some nerve damage to thumb as initial antibiotics didnt work. she went from swollen and very unfortable to operation in 4 days. but i think that is not that common to be so severe.

Think its worth seeing emergency dr?
Hate dealing with them as have to go through about 5 phone calls before you speake to someone who tells you to go to otherside of town!

Do you happen to live in Surrey or the south west? I'm asking as I was reading the spider bite thing from Flase widow spiders yesterday and their bites blister and swell (usually about 30 mins after bite). It hurts more than a bee sting and swells up etc, as you've described. They're prevalent in the south west and surrey.

luciemule · 05/05/2007 20:21

that's supposed to read False Widow, not flash widow! ps - wasn't meaning to scare you with the spider bite thing - they don't kill you or anything!

MrsWho · 05/05/2007 20:22

no I'm in the north west

Probably not that then - I'd go to emergency doc though to see if they can shed some light. It'll just prolong it if you do need antibiotics if you leave it and don't go.

gone down a bit today but swells up when it gets warm.Dr said wait til today to see whether its worth going to see them

My mum had somethign similar last week and they diagnosed Celluvitis (sp). Anitbiotics brought it back down but left her with very dry skin - flaking off - so they gave acquis cream

Bumping this 'cos its back and in exactly the same place, the scab from last time is right in the middle of the new swollen, weeping arm.

Nymphadora · 11/06/2007 22:14

again

tigi · 11/06/2007 22:16

my arm really swelled last year from a wasp. Doc said take piriton. Red ant bite made it swollen (not as much though) today.

Nymphadora · 11/06/2007 22:24

Already on anti-histamines, notsure how much more I can take
