Possible Coeliac?

Hello all,
Just after a bit of advice really as I have no idea where to start. The paediatrician has questioned/suggested that 11mo DS may have coeliac disease. He said its quite uncommon to show up that early if there's no history already in the family, which there's not. However he went on to say that some people can have much milder forms and a lot of people go undiagnosed... so it's got me thinking....

DH has funny 'digestive issues'. He has bouts of diarrhoea which can last from 1 day to 3 days - during this time he needs to go multiple times a day and it is urgent. He gets very bloated at random times i.e. may have had very small meals all day but very bloated stomach. The diarrhoea and bloating is most of the time accompanied by a 'tender' stomach (as he describes it) and sometimes stomach cramps. Even when no diarrhoea he goes to the toilet a lot during the day.

Basically just trying to understand if this could be something he needs to look into? Do the symptoms fit? Until this morning I was totally clueless about Coeliac disease! I've always nagged DH to go and get it checked out but in my mind I guess I suspected lactose intolerance or maybe an IBS type syndrome. I've never really noted what he's been eating when these episodes occur.

Could be completely overthinking it...

Yes the symptoms fit, it’s far more common to reach your 40s -50s and get diagnosed and by then a lot of damage can be done

I was 42 on diagnosis and severe but missed due to immune deficiency, my children were subsequently diagnosed aged 7 and 9

I would suggest your dh speaks to his gp and has some basic check done to see if he too is affected

Have a look at the Coeliac uk website, they have a lot of information about symptoms and a symptoms questionnaire

It is always worth being screened for coeliac disease, and perhaps ask for genetic testing. There are some (thankfully rare) nasty conditions caused by gluten and/or coeliac and without diagnosis the symptoms wouldn't be connected with the gluten, therefore preventing essential treatment. I suffer from some of the awful nasty rare complications and I'd rather endlessly go on about getting tested than think of someone else having their life turned upside down so drastically when a few simple tests can prevent them. I wasn't diagnosed for 16+ years and now the damage is irreparable. Good luck.
