I'm going gluten free shopping today for the first time. Which is best for price and variety? (I'm on a right budget) I live close to Morrissions but shop at ASDA, I can also get to Sainsbury's and Tesco

I find gf pasta grows on you. At first I wasn't so keen and the rest of the family definitely weren't. Now most of the pasta I cook in the house is gf (not spaghetti as I am not as keen on it and they have gluten spag bol occasionally) and it has been months or years since anyone has passed comment on it. Just be careful not to overcook it.
Aldis near me don't have much gf but they do have gf cereal bars which are yummy. I always buy loads because I am greedy in the hope that they will realise that there might be a market for gf food there.

amazon also stock other brands too. For example, these and these.

I just avoid gluten free pasta completely, but then i was never a big pasta fan and it's something i associate with being a poor student!

If we make bolognese I either have it over courgetti or a jacket potato. Lasagna I make with vegetable layers.

Whole Foods do GF soft corn tortillas. Pricey though!

Sainsbury's do a fresh gf pasta (I've bought the same brand - Evexia -from Ocado too) which my husband didn't believe me wasn't normal pasta until I showed him the packet. It was about the same price as their normal fresh pasta too I think.
How did you get on in your local supermarkets.

Someone mentioned that their local Aldi doesn't have much in their gluten free range - speak to them and ask if they can get more gf products in. By stocking it they have attracted a lot of new customers that wouldn't normally have shopped there especially as there is a Waitrose almost next door and considering the local demographic

Not doesn't have much, doesn't stock the gluten free range at all. I've asked previously, no plans to change.

@MelissaM I'll give the fresh pasta ago. My local supermarkets seem to have a good range, I've not noticed in my local Aldi, but do tend to go in and buy what I've gone in for

Thanks guys you've all been amazing, we've had some fantastic progress this weekend. She likes ASDA's gf pasta and warburtons gf wraps toasted with a filling on top. We went shopping and I showed her what's on offer and we discussed different meal ideas. I made a gf loaf in the oven which she liked. She was complaining about being able to see her ribs tonight (she's dropped below 9th centile) maybe that will be a motivation she can relate to because the promise of no more stomach ache didn't work!

You might be better off scoping out what is available in your local stores as even shops in the same chain differ greatly.

I find tesco has the best range of cakes, biscuits, store cups board.

Sainsburys/morrisons better at fresh stuff like sausages.

I personally prefer m&s bread 🍞

It's hard to get actual corn tortillas, they are mostly made of wheat but you can buy the flour (masa harina) and make your own. V tasty.

How old is your daughter?

Some people find they put on weight once the gut recovers and they're absorbing stuff properly. Personally I struggle to maintain weight on a gf diet.

bedtimestories · 26/02/2018 14:08

Thanks @soapboxqueen I'm yet to try Tesco, but I'll try there when I next need more supplies.

@Olga81 she's 7, she's always been on the skinny side but I've always been told by health professionals that's her weight to height ratio is fine.
