my ds has just turned 2 and for the last week or so has had real trouble doing a number 2
he really really strains and he is only marking his nappy i saw the health visitor yesterday and she said to give him more fibre so he has lots of rasins and apricots and diluted orange juice
the thing is when i got him out the bath tonight i had him laid across my lap and lifted his legs to dry his bum and poo was coming out so it seems as if he is blocked up?
and ideas or advice would be great sorry for the long post and TMI!

Yes , sounds like overflow. He's constipated

Lots of fluid, waters best or pure juice, he

may need a mild laxative like lactlulose, ask

gp. once he's sorted increase his fibre &

fluids.

nuttyaboutchoceggs · 24/04/2007 19:26

do you think i should give him some pure oj now?

OP posts:
nanninurse · 24/04/2007 19:28

yes, give him as much as he will take, & keep offering water too.

NicJane · 24/04/2007 19:29

my ds used to get terribly bunged and I once had to help one out - ugh. But yes - give him oj, or even water if he doesn't like juice. Loads of fluids is the key - along with fibre. Lactulose is great for keeping stools soft, but won't soften the blockage if its already in the rectum

Our dd1 had this problem, we have had to help her pass really hard poo's before now. We now make sure she has at least 6 lots of fruit and veggies each day, on top of this she has innocent fruit smoothies, and shreddies or shedded wheat for breakfast. This seems to keep things working fairly smoothly. It is distressing when you see them straining, you could try putting lots of vaseline or sudocrem round his bot just to soothe it, this worked our dd. Hope he's sorted out soon.

nuttyaboutchoceggs · 24/04/2007 20:15

he has had 2 cups of oj if he dosnt clear out tonight ill take him to the docs tomorrow

Poor chap, have you tried a warm bath followed by a clockwise massage on tummy and lower back?

Re fruit and veg, I think bananas can clog a little one up a bit, but TMI pears and apples work a treat to get things moving!

Jacanne · 24/04/2007 20:23

I would use lactulose over a week or so, gradually reducing the dose as time goes on. This is what I've done on GP's advice for both of mine who have had the kind of constipation that has required "digital" removal as the GP termed it. In both cases it sorted out the problem and it hasn't been as bad since.

nuttyaboutchoceggs · 24/04/2007 20:24

no havnt tried that b1977 he dosnt have a lot of bananas but oranges made him go loads and give him a sore bum hopefully the oj will work

Have a recipe for weetabix buns if you want it, have posted it before. Gets a bit more fibre into them. Been there and up to the emergency doctors too with our dd. Hate to see them suffer like that.

nuttyaboutchoceggs · 26/04/2007 20:22

oh yes please cmt they sound nice

100g butter,softened
100g caster sugar
2 eggs, beaten
75g self raising flour
3 weetabix, crushed
50g chocolate chips, plain, milk or white. I just use buttons broken up!

Preheat oven 180 degrees or gas mark 4
Line a bun tin with 12 paper cases
Cream the butter and sugar together and slowly add the beaten egg, beating well after each addition.
Fold in flour, weetabix and the chocolate chips until evenly combined.
Spoon mixture into paper cases and bake for 20 minutes until risen and golden brown.
Allow to cool and drizzle with melted chocolate (optional)

Easy to make, we have these alot.

Another receipe we give to dd for a little extra fibre is albran loaf. Really easy too.

100g Allbran (kelloggs)
125 Caster sugar
200g mixed dried fruit ( way to much, I just put in half a tub of cherries) or currents
1/2 pint milk (half a pint)
100g Self raising flour

Put allbran, sugar and fruit in a bowl and mix, then add milk and leave to stand for half an hour. Seive in flour and mix well, then pour into a well greased 2 1b loaf tin. Bake in a moderate oven gas mark 4 or 180 degrees for aprox one and a quarter to one and a half hours. Turn out and allow to cool.

I sympathise with all mums dealing with chronic constipation. My DD is 4 now and has been suffering for well over a year. Longest she went without proper poo was 4 weeks - we were on hols and ended up at A&E. She was prescribed Movicol but wouldn't take it due to taste. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS HOW TO GET THE MOVICOL DOWN THEM? Now on Docusol and waiting to see paed next month. She has recurring UTIs with it - has anyone else experienced this? No-one seems to understand how hellish this problem is and our lives are ruled by poo! Seriously though, have felt very stressed and depressed by it. Has anyone else felt very low with it? Love to hear from anyone about this. Thanks.

NKF · 27/04/2007 13:59

Loads of water I'd say,

bighair21 · 27/04/2007 14:01

Thanks for that. Trying to get her to drink as much as poss but she's a stubborn monkey and doesn't want to drink much! Any ideas on how?

NKF · 27/04/2007 14:03

I think orange juice is supposed to be effective. You could freeze some (like a lolly).

bighair21 · 27/04/2007 14:04

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go!

GoodEnoughMum · 27/04/2007 14:58

I use glycerol suppositories for my son when he gets badly constipated. Once they are constipated you need to relieve the constipation as well as altering their diet and amount they drink. My baby failed to thrive due in part to constipation and we have found a combination of Senna (which he loves to take) and lactulose with lots of water and a good diet works and I use a glycerol suppository at the first sign of major constipation otherwise he gets into a vicious circle of not going because it is too painful. This is on the doctor's advice but they didn't seem too concerned about repeat use of suppositories saying that he wouldn't become reliant on them. HTH.

bighair21 · 27/04/2007 15:52

Thanks for that good advice. My daughter is on lactulose aswell, which helps. Does your child mind you putting in the suppositories? Can't help worrying that this will freak her out! Trying to change her diet but not easy as she is quite a bad eater. How long has your child been on senna?

GoodEnoughMum · 27/04/2007 16:33

He doesn't like the suppositories much. I use a glove and lubricant (sorry if TMI) and don't let him see me coming! The worst bit is having to push it up a bit otherwise it comes straight out again but I do it pretty gently and he doesn't seem to mind too much. He's been on Senna since he turned one - they wouldn't give it to him before that. He honestly loves to take it so I don't know if it is worth you asking to try that instead of Movicol?
