Hilary are you out there?
We have been avoiding everything on the avoidance list given to us by a hospital as dd is allergic to eggs and nuts.
However we have now found out that the lists( that includes all of the egg derivites you mentioned before and on the nut one the number E471.)could be wrong.
DD had a 'safe' flapjack the other day and then we realised it contained E471 ,she was okay and did not react. We then realised this E number is in most bread. We spoke to the Anaphylaxis Campaign who said that the list were wrong (they are dated 2003)and that this is not an allergen that needs to be avoided.
Also on the lists it says to avoid coconut but our consultant who gave us the list without looking at it says coconut is ok.
we are worried to about possible contmination from toiltries ,massge oils etc.if i were to use a products containing a nut product for example would contact bring out a allergic reaction in DD?

I'm not Hilary but didn't want you to get no reply. I'd trust the anaphylaxis camapaign before I'd trust our current consultant.

Very few people with nut allergy react to coconut as it's not a true nut. You can be allergic to anything but my nut allergic child has no problem with it.

It depends how sensitive your child is what the contact risk is. Some don't react to contact, others will react to even the smallest trace. Personally I gave up nuts (which I love) when my child was diagnosed. Even if you eat them outside the house there is too much of a contamination risk. I will not even allow unopened packets of nuts in the house or in the car.

Thankyou tatt what do you do about toiletries etc.
DD is severly allergic we went to aparty where peanuts were on the table and my oh was eating them (before we knew) and he was holding her and within minutes she was covered in blotches

E471 facts

Hi there p123, how is your little one? I am only on here for a short while as have a lot of work to do, I have read your thread and coconut is deemed as ok, although the word nut is in its name its not in the same group as such with regards to allergies. E471 is fine too I have attached a link to its facts so you can have a look for yourself.

I personally would not use any products with almond oil etc in it but coconut I would say is safe, although if you feel it better to cut it out then there are plenty of others to choose from. Go with whatever you feel safest.

H .x.

all E-numbers derived from animal origin

Have a read through

E322
E1105 (both egg)

Like Hillary I don't use anything which has almond oil in but I'd be happy to use ones with coocnut oil. Since my skin is sensitive I have a limited range of things I stick to anyway.

We do have a problem with shampoo as she seems to get a flakey scalp from everything. I'll try a new one and first time Ok, second not

Careful with toiletries based on peanut oil (arachis oil). We had one prescribed for eczema and now wonder if that was the start of his peanut allergy.
